Upgrade from MX19 to MX 23 - No Sound!

I switched to MX Linux 5 years ago when Win7 came to an end.
With the encouragement of a friend, and with considerable support from this forum, I managed to install MX19 but with quite a bit of difficulty.
After years as an incidental Windows user, I've now become an incidental Linux user. After the teething troubles with the initial set up, and the steep learning curve, I have had very few issues with my machine running Linux. With MX19 now well past it's own end of life, I have taken the plunge and installed MX23.5 on my trusty old machine, which just refuses to die! It's still perfectly usable for all the things which I want to do, so I see no reason to discard it while it still runs.
I am relieved to see that MX23 is very familiar to me.
(-:

The installation went so smoothly compared to my first attempt 5 years ago. However, I have got hung up, and rather frustrated, trying to get the sound working! I remember that I had problems with the sound last time. I think that it came down to switching off the embedded motherboard sound in the bios. Well it is still switched off in the bios but I can't work out how to get any sound from the old PC.

I have gone through the advice in the user manual and I have tried searching the forum for a solution. It seems that problems with sound are very common but I can't get anything to work.
Any help would be most appreciated.

So, first thing, lets have you run MX Select Sound and choose your default sound card from the drop down list and then click on apply (I have had to click apply a couple of times on some machines.)

Then test the sound using the button.

If no sound there, then choose the other sound card, click apply and then try it again.

If that suggestion does not work:

q) Do you get no sound on all sources: video, You Tube, music etc?

2) Have you tried starting a sound source, then opening pavucontrol (right-click speaker icon > open mixer) to adjust input, output, etc?

CharlesV many thanks for your suggestion.
Yes, there are two sound cards. It seems that one is from the graphics card via HDMI output and the other is the sound card that I plug my headphones into.
I have tried selecting both in turn, and clicked on apply several times, still no sound from either when clicking "Test current sound card".

No sound on Firefox or Strawberry player.

OK, I use a Samsung smart TV as a monitor connected to the PC via HDMI. However, I always have the volume on the TV turned down and use headphones plugged into the sound card when listening to music, video etc.

I have had a good play around with the settings in pavucontrol. I increased the TV volume and I can hear sound from the TV on all sources even though the associated HDMI graphics card was not selected in MX Sound Select as per CharlesV instructions. Apart from not disturbing my wife, I now understand why I prefer to listen with headphones, the TV sound is dreadful!

To get the sound on the TV, in the pavucontrol "Configuration" tab I have selected, in turn, all the profiles listed under both sound cards from the drop down menu. The one labelled "Pro Audio" under the HDMI graphics card is the only one that has given any sound even though this card is not selected in MX Sound Select.

In pavucontrol under the "Output Devices" I can see the flickering blue bar beneath the volume slider, suggesting that something is registering with the sound card that the headphones are plugged into...

After playing with pavucontrol as above, I have gone back to the MX Select Sound. I can now hear the test message "Front left, front right" through the TV when either of the 2 sound cards are selected, but only if I choose "Pro Audio" in the profiles drop down menu under the "Configuration" tab in pavucontrol.
Nothing from the headphones connected to my sound card...

Thanks for the quick reply.

I can't see an option to select headphones. There is just one option in the drop down menu for my soundcard "Analog Output"

I'm stuck with no sound through my headphones.
Since the sound worked fine running MX19, I decided to try an older kernel. I chose the oldest one which was available: 4.19.276.
Still no joy with the sound.

Is it likely that there is a hardware fault with the sound card and that it coincidentally happened at same time I chose to upgrade?
Would I be better asking in a different section?

Hi,

MX 23 uses PipeWire now, not PulseAudio. Did you install MX 23 fresh? Or did you manually upgrade from 19 to 23?

If it was an upgrade it could be possible that all the PipeWire stuff wasn't fully configured or the 'pipewire-setup-mx' package was not pulled in which ensures a proper setup. In my opinion it is always best to do a fresh install any time there is a platform change (ie MX-23 - MX-25) jumping from MX-19 - 23 was a pretty risky leap.

AV Linux,
Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I did a fresh install of MX23. Sorry, I did not make that clear.
I had previously been running MX19 for the past 5 years, with thankfully very little intervention, after the initial teething trouble.
Not familiar with PipeWire...

Thank you, that looks good!

So everything is in place as far as PipeWire replacing PulseAudio, I don't use XFCE4 nor do I use onboard soundcard headphone out so I'm not 100% sure what to advise at this point.. My main concern was that PipeWire wasn't fully installed but your term output looks good..

What soundcard are you wanting the headphone output from?

AV Linux,

AVLinux wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 7:51 pm What soundcard are you wanting the headphone output from?
There is onboard sound on the motherboard, which I switched off in bios when I first switched from Win7. That is still switched off.
There is sound from the graphics card to the TV which I use as a monitor via HDMI. I have got this working but the 24" TV sounds terrible and, more importantly, it would disturb my wife!
I would like to use my headphones plugged into the Creative Xfi sound card as I have always done since switching to Linux 5 years ago.

@rob2cv Give the following a try:

In a terminal, run

Code: Select all

alsamixer

Once it is loaded on screen, then:
F6 and select a sound card
F5 to show all areas

look for Headphones and what the sound level is ( the two numbers on each side of the <> )
Use right / left arrow keys to navigate to the Headphones module and then +- to raise or lower the values. If the values are 0<>0 then raise them up to around 80<>80

and then test your headphones. You may have to go higher than 80, and you may have to choose a different sound card, depending upon where your headphones are plugged into.

I have tried plugging the headphones in and back out again. I can hear them crackle as I do this. I think that the headphones are still working at least!
I can't spend anymore time on this just now.
I'll get back to it tomorrow, if there are more suggestions.

only thing I can think of is to try selecting a different sound card in the alsamixer .. I have never seen card that had headphones, but not the headphone setup in alsamixer.

I'm going to jump in here with this. Assuming that audio worked fine with MX 19, I think that you should use MX Package Installer (MXPI) to install the AntiX 4.19 kernel, reboot and at the Grub screen select Advanced Options and then mark the 4.19 kernel as the boot choice for this session. Does sound now work?

If it was an upgrade it could be possible that all the PipeWire stuff wasn't fully configured or the 'pipewire-setup-mx' package was not pulled in which ensures a proper setup.
A side note, if someone who is contemplating an in-place upgrade (with the required chops to do it) happens to reads this: when/after doing a manual upgrade like that, MX 23 totally works without PipeWire, even if that is the default audio solution on the official ISOs now. Having done a manual upgrade, I specifically did not want PipeWire, and it hasn't been pulled into the master version of my install, ever. I've installed the system on metal from ISOs produced from that master version, and used it on laptops and desktops alike; the sound works everywhere, both in consumer grade software and professional audio applications. It uses Pulseaudio for the former, and JACK for the latter (when not using direct ALSA). PA works both launched individually and launching a PA JACK sink. Just mentioning this so that it's clear there is no inherent "PipeWire required, otherwise software doesn't have sound on MX" kind of thing in MX 23.

Pipewire is conflicting with pulseaudio, so one of them must be removed. To see them install status

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy pipewire

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy pulseaudio
If removing pipewire, also pipewire-bin need to remove.

Assuming that audio worked fine with MX 19, I think that you should use MX Package Installer (MXPI) to install the AntiX 4.19 kernel, reboot and at the Grub screen select Advanced Options and then mark the 4.19 kernel as the boot choice for this session. Does sound now work?
j2mcgreg,
Thanks for the suggestion. Those were my exact thoughts too!
I already tried this (see post #9) but the sound still did not work.

RJP wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 9:18 am Pipewire is conflicting with pulseaudio, so one of them must be removed. To see them install status

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy pipewire

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy pulseaudio
If removing pipewire, also pipewire-bin need to remove.
RJP thanks for the suggestion. Here is the output:

I'm totally lost with the sound card test you suggested though???
Do I just copy and paste those lines of code into the terminal?

You can copy sound card test into the Terminal without #!/bin/bash , or you can make a script from that test. Command

Code: Select all

inxi -A | grep Server
tells the active audio server.

If inxi -A | grep Server returns nothing, then plain alsa is in use. Sounds are working with plain alsa too if pipewire or pulseaudio has not on.

PipeWire is in use then...

Today, I went to a local PC repair shop and bought a secondhand PCI sound card. I fitted the new card but it did not show up at all. The vendor wasn't sure whether it worked or not.
Whilst I had the case open, I carefully cleaned out the layer of dust and fluff that was covering most of the components with an air duster, a soft brush and vacuum cleaner.

I carefully cleaned my original sound card, which was covered in dust, and replaced it in the PC.
When I switched the machine back on sound through the headphones worked straight away without any further intervention!

I don't know why that would happen but I'm very glad that it has.
Thanks to all who offered help, I now know much more about all the audio settings that I would otherwise have done.

VERY interesting ... I wonder if just removing and replacing the sound card was "the fix" ... maybe it was just not snug in the seat?

Either way, very glad to hear you have it working!

Haha,

I take a leaf blower to my PC every few months whether it needs it or not (*it always needs it).. My dogs instantly come running to lick my face as I grunt and groan on my knees under the Desk to dislodge the tower..

#1 Enemy is PEBKAC #2 Enemy is dust...

@AVLinux
Could it really be coincidental that the sound just happened to stop working when I chose to install MX23?
Anyhow, I'm very pleased that my machine is back up and running and hopefully now makes it past 20 years of useful computing thanks to Linux and the kindness of the good folk of this forum.
