Palemoon 33.5 causing logout

Posted: Fri Jan 17, 2025 12:30 pm
by galen
Upgraded to 33.5 and when run even in safe mode,
it boots me out of my session and back to LightDM

sudo dmesg - w
not showing anything

should I set xessions to capture the bug?
or
palemoon -d
won't catch bug because of exiting to lightDM

ideas?

... Probably because your CPU do not have the avx flag. (but Stevo can give the answer for the MX package)

flags: lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 9975

https://www.palemoon.org/releasenotes.shtml
v33.3.0 (2024-08-13)
This is a major development update.Important notes with this version:
From this version forward, all 64-bit releases require a processor with AVX capabilities!

I would say that his FrankenMX has something to do with it. I turn off AVX for my native builds.

Code: Select all

Just to say that the latest 33.5 Palemoon is working fine on antiX.
Thanks @Stevo

However, even turning off AVX can't make it work with FrankenMX. If they are married to it, maybe the binary from palemoon.org could work...except it needs AVX.

Working on PM 33.5.1...I am thinking of providing a separate AVX version, since it is supposed to provide significant performance gains if your processor supports it.

I have tried the avx version from palemoon site, provide just a little performance gains but only or mostly for videos and audio here.

Palemoon is not my critical browser
I'll lookup AVX

Is there a kernel flag I could try?

PS kernel 6.x fails to install on this computer

... You can try this :
https://ftp2.palemoon.org/avx/linux/
palemoon-33.5.1.linux-x86_64-sse2_gtk2.tar.xz 16-Jan-2025 17:13 36024628

FI: The new MX package option should be for palemoon amd64: 33.5.1-1mx23+avx (not + avs)

I am not sure what you mean by this. 33.5.1-1mx23+avx is only in the test repo.

I mean the name into MXPI test repos is : 33.5.1-1mx23+avs (not +avx) ... So maybe a mistake ?

Whoops it was late at night...OK, avs stands for AV(X)...Something

I kid, I kid, rebuilding as "avx". Luckily, it will be an upgrade from "avs", and not the other way around, and was in the test repo.

OK, they're built and uploading, I took a nap in the meantime. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VaMADM ... sp=sharing

More retconning: obviously, avs was "AV(X) Support". :p

lscpu will tell you about your cpu. You can use this to only show if your cpu supports avx instructions.

Code: Select all

lscpu | grep -o "avx[^ ]*"
