You can also change the setting in the xfce settings editor. Systems which exhibit the problem likely have "-1" in place of a whole number. that number is supposed to be the number of a workspace, but I think the logic is a little dumb somewhere.

so taking a trip throught xfdesktop source code, that value appears to be set to -1 if not already defined. definitely something wrong with it. There are other reports now.

FYI:

After my latest AHS update I was blinded by my laptop screen w/ no background. Ahh!
I WAS able to select a background, and it stuck just fine.
