If you enable all the toolbar icons, open thunar and change icon themes you will see that some of the toolbar icons use a placeholder icon. I have noticed this since about 4.16 or 4.18 with the "list view" icon and it happens with the new "change active view type" icon. It might also happen with other custom actions toolbar icons. I don't know if not finding an icon can cause it to crash.
The latest versions of Flat-Remix icons no longer have "GTK" in their name, so you [Correction - it was the OP who was using Flat Remix Gtk... icons] are using an old version.

About the only time I see placeholder icons, especially on the navigation toolbar buttons, in Thunar, is when I use an old, unmaintained icon set that doesn't conform with latest freedesktop rules/specs for icon naming/location.

Here is what my 2016 Flat-remix icon set looks like in Thunar [xfce 4.20]. [to my embarrassment, I still had this in MX23's ~/.icons folder, copied over probably from the MX17/18 partition before I deleted it.

Here is what the Feb 2024 version of Flat-Remix-Teal-Dark [no gtk in the name] looks like. Once every few years I might check icon sites for updates to the icon sets I regularly use, but I have so many distros on my multiboot machine and I forgot to replace the old version in MX23.

Just to keep track of this: ToZ on the Xfce Forum has pointed to this known problem:

https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/-/issues/1511

He adds that the patch will be part of upcoming thunar 4.20.1

good then the version in test should clear up the issue. the OP's home folder is a mount point, and so would trigger everytime thunar opened.

probably opening thunar into the root folder would work, but of course going to home folder would instantly crash.

I'm glad they got a quick fix.

Would you mind confirming the list of all packages connected with XFCE 4.20, that can be "apt-mark hold" for reasonable time without additional risks? I would like to wait some time with this upgrade. Thunar operates directly on data files. The risk is too high for me.

BTW, I think that maybe for the future, in MX Linux 25 would you mind creating something like 'super stable repo' - with only security updates and staying behind patiently like Debian Stable with upgrades (+ MX Tools also with similar to Debian Stable the policy of update). I use MX Linux as my main system for everything, where rock stability is the priority.

hmm, but must not be universal, as with a /home on a mount point, I did not see the crash. probably how it slipped by.

installed new thunar. didn't hurt anything, but I can't reproduce the bug either so ???

I just uploaded it to the MX Test repo so you can see if that fixes things.
And if you haven't yet tried this, delete the ~/.config/Thunar folder and reboot. The reboot is because Thunar leaves a process going after you have closed it so the config files aren't reloaded until you reboot.
I'm not on the machine which has the troubled 4.20 version running, as soon as I get back to it, I'll try that. Meanwhile, I just did a fresh MX 23.5 install in another virtualbox, from the latest iso I downloaded this afternoon, just to see whether that too would cause problems. Well it doesn't, Thunar opens normally, including with the with the Flat-Remix theme and icon set, well the blue ones anyway, the teal version weirdly presents a transparent background making it unusable.

I actually had deletet the ~/.config/Thunar folder - it had made no difference BUT I had not rebooted before trying Thunar again, so I'll definitely try that before I do anything else, and will report back!

The latest versions of Flat-Remix icons no longer have "GTK" in their name, so you [Correction - it was the OP who was using Flat Remix Gtk... icons] are using an old version.
The odd thing is, in the fresh MX 23.5 install I did in another Virtualbox earlier, the old Flat remix stuff - with GTK in its name - does not interfere with Thunar so not sure whether that's the issue. But I should try the latest version anyway just to be sure that can really be excluded as the culprit.
