ExpressVPN - Unable to sign in. Please check your connection and try again.

Hi, I want to use ExpressVPN on my computer. Quick System Info is included at the end
of this message.

I searched MX forums and this is what I found for installing expressvpn:
1 - Boot the computer with systemd
2 - Install expressvpn from MX Package Installer, not ExpressVPN website.
It is what I did before installing.

After install, executing expressvpn at the command line gives the usual documentation list:
************************************************************
>>> expressvpn
NAME:
expressvpn - ExpressVPN command line interface

USAGE:
expressvpn command [arguments...]

VERSION:
3.78.0.0 (8dea65c45)

COMMANDS:
activate Activate account
connect Connect to VPN
............ etc.
************************************************************

To activate:
************************************************************
>>> sudo expressvpn activate
>>> [sudo] password for dragon01:
>>> Enter activation code:
>>> Activating...
>>> Unable to sign in. Please check your connection and try again.
************************************************************

Cannot activate. I got the activation code from ExpressVPN website when I bought the software.
I tried many times. Reboot the computer (systemd). Still cannot activate.
I sent a message to ExpressVPN Help service. Here is their reply:
***************************************************************************
**** In the meantime, do you have a different network such as a mobile hotspot that your device can
**** connect to? This way, we can isolate the issue and see if that works for you.
**** If that still doesn't work for you, let’s perform a clean installation of your ExpressVPN app. This is to
**** ensure that the issue is not caused by problems related to the installation of the app.
**** Uninstall the app.
**** Reboot your device
**** Turn off any security software on your device
**** Install the latest version of the app.
**************************************************************************
They insist I try with "a different network such as a mobile hotspot" but I cannot. My internet connection
is the simplest you can have: a network cable from the internet computer to a modem (not a router)
and a telephone cable from the modem to a telephone outlet. I have only one internet computer and
there is no internet connection problem whatsoever with that computer.
They ask to "Turn off any security software on your device" , how this is done ? Is it required ?

Surely there are other MX users that have ExpressVPN installed and running on their computer,
what special step they took to get this done ?

Thanks for helping.

(1)The firewall in MX 23 XFCE is on by default. Temporarily disable it and see if it's possible to complete the connection. If it works you will have to write a rule that allows Express VPN to traverse the firewall.

(2)This site shows the release date for your HDD was Apr 7, 2010
https://www.amazon.com/WD3200AAJB-00J3A ... B00MBMSP8O
while this site says it was Q4 2013:
https://hdd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest ... AJB-00J3A0
so it's at least eleven years old and possibly fourteen. This means that bad blocks on the HDD could be causing the app to be incompletely read by the cpu and thus failing to complete the connection. In any event that HDD should be replaced.

(3)Your HDD is getting full (78.5% used) so you should free up some space before it locks up and won't let you log on to your computer.

Are you sure you read the activation instructions correctly?
Because I don't think it works for a root account (with sudo).
But I admit I've never done an activation because I don't have an expressvpn account.

Hi, it doesn't work.

Here is what I did:
1 - Disable the firewall
2 - Write on the command line: expressvpn activate
3 - Computer >>>>> Enter activation code:
4 - Write on the command line: copy/paste 9999999999999999 (activation code not the real one)
5 - Computer >>>>> Activating...
6 - Computer >>>>> Unable to sign in. Please check your connection and try again.
On ExpressVPN website my account page is open, the activation code is clearly written
and everything seems OK.

I am lost with all this. What can I do now ?

Suggest to try from a fresh Live-booted media (either ISO or USB).
Do use latest official snapshot from November, 15th
First try normal installation MXPI->Network ->ExpressVPN.
In case you got the same activation issue.
Maybe boot again the LiveISO/USB, but this time with enabled systemd. (add bootparamter init=/lib/systemd/systemd)
and install the deb downloaded directly from expressvpn - not using MXPI.
Report back any issue.
Thanks

Hi, thanks for your fast reply. At present expressvpn is installed from MX Package Installer. But in the beginning I installed from ExpressVPN website. It didn't work so I went to MX Package Installer. And from the beginning the computer is booted with systemd as it is recommended by ExpressVPN.

Even if expressvpn works with a new ISO/USB it doesn't tell me what to do with my actual MX installation, i.e. what is the problem and what to correct. Before I reinstall a new system I will ask for a refund at ExpressVPN and try a new VPN company.
Surely you know at MX Linux what VPN installs easily and provides a user-friendly interface. I choose ExpressVPN because of speed however it is one of the more expensive and I will easily change if the new one works, and at a lower price.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, I might not expressed clearly, it would help us, to see whether something with MXPI-installation procedure need to adjusted or not.
So if works with MX LiveMedia, or if it works with MX LiveMedia and systemd only, it would help.
As we have nothing to test activation, b/c we don't have an account to activate, you would help us to help you ;=)

ExpressVPN works fine for me. Your VPN Activation code is in the first page when you log into your account. Just copy and paste it in the terminal. If you're typing it in, don't. There is no systemd needed. It works fine as is from the MX Package installation.

Another option if you botched the install/setup somehow, is just to download the deb version of expressvpn from their website --> https://www.expressvpn.com/setup#linux
Right-click to install the deb version (choose the Ubuntu 64-bit version), and open terminal and do the same thing as above. From cmd line, just run the following;

expressvpn activate
<activation code>

That's it. Then just a few simple cmd lines needed to enable options. The only one you need to remember is below.

expressvpn -help

installing the downloaded deb-version on sysVinit may create issue, that was the reason for the adjustment within the MXPI->Network->ExpressVPN entry.
But if installing now of the downloaded deb also works in sysVinit, without any followup issues, that would be good to know.
B/c the deb was prepared only for systemd (to install/run properly), hence the sysvinit adjustments added,
+++EDIT+++
Looking up the original adjustment, the reason for failing to install in sysVinit on MX Linux, was they had
checked whether running systemd or sysVinit, by just checking whether systemd's command systemctl
is available or not, and concluded wrongly if systemctl is found we are running systemd.
But running systemctl in sysVinit fails to start.
So if anyone could confirm that the downloaded deb now also installs properly when booted sysVinit (the default in MX)
and provides a functional ExpressVPN, we could then adjust the tweaks made in MXPI.

With NordVPN I sometimes have to jump through some activation page hoops that aren't clearly defined, after an update.
I fretted about the root causes of the problem, but it was the lack of specific instructional details that tripped me up.
The first times were a frustrating pain, then I got the hang of it.
Be calm and patient and try to walk through it in different ways.

Hi, there is a 7 days free-trial at ExpressVPN:

<<<<< https://www.expressvpn.com/order-deals-trial >>>>> and after that trial you can try MX Package Install,
that one should also have a 7 days free-trial. You can go a long way in assessing what is going on.

I am a newbie at Linux and with that VPN thing I know less than I tought .......

@fehlix - I've always updated expressvpn using the MXPI installer.

I remember the adjustment you mentioned before. So, I uninstalled expressvpn using MXPI. Then I tried to run but it failed since it uninstalled. Just to check to make sure.

Then I just downloaded the Ubuntu 64-bit deb file, and re-installed again. I had to re-activate it, and I set up the additional advanced protection options. All worked fine.

Then I went into MXPI and tried to re-install it to see if it works as well. It re-installed with MXPI and expressvpn still works.

Hmme... they still have such constructs with their installer code:

Code: Select all

    echo "Installing expressvpn service..."
    # If systemctl exists we assume systemd, otherwise we try a few distro specific variations
if command -v systemctl &>/dev/null; then
        install_systemd

which is supposed to fail when booting MX Linux with default sysVinit.
So their assumption is simply wrong.
And so unfortunately, I cannot get rid, of our fix within MXPI-> ExpressVPN installer.

Does the above constructs prevent the OP from installing on MX? When you say its supposed to fail, I'm booting MX Linux with SysV, right? But it works without failing for me. But for some reason not working for OP at the activation point.

On booted MX Linux with default sysVinit,
they failed during fresh installation of the downloaded and directly install deb,
to start the daemon. The error message normally shown, would look like this:

Code: Select all

systemctl start expressvpn
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
On upgrade, in addtion to not able to start/restart, they would not able to stop the old running daemon:

Code: Select all

systemctl stop expressvpn
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
They may have suppressed to show the error message, so you might not notice.
So in this sense the the installtion failed.
And also the init-scripts despite get installed would not have been enabled.
So after reboot with sysVinit again, VPN would not get started b/c init scripts have not been enabled to start the daemon.

On systemd booted MX Linux, the directly installed deb should work, but booting again with sysVinit
may not make daemon go up.
So. despite they have prepared everything incl. init-scripts, the missed to install properly due to one wrong assumption made.

Hi, one way to test if the problem is with my computer is to install a vpn from another vpn provider.
I did and the new vpn app works fine. On top of this it has a GUI to select server and other settings,
all this directly in MX Linux.
For me that topic is closed. If someone is asking I will identify the new vpn provider.
Have a good day.

It's always a good attitude to share what works out of the box with MX Linux, perhaps also good to mention whether
it works with both init's (systemd and sysVinit).

Hi, The new vpn app is Proton VPN. There is a specific .deb install file for MX Linux. For now it works fine. A "Proton VPN" item has appeared in the "Internet" folder menu. This is a GUI to select server and other settings, all this directly in MX Linux.
I don't have any relation, business or otherwise, with Proton VPN.
Thanks to all for their help and have a good day.

Is it working with systemd and/or sysVinit?
I found several installation methods for it and the instructions did not lead to all of them, including the MX Linux method - although the MX Linux deb install does seem specific and therefore the correct one. I initially received many frequent errors maybe close to a year ago now, I've received dozens of upgrades since then and it has gotten MUCH BETTER although yesterday a password manager stated that I could login from Germany and it wasn't set to Germany.
Just FYI.

Hi, all the install procedure and first tests of Proton VPN were done under systemd.
Next time I reboot the computer I could try to use Proton VPN under sysVinit
but I won't reboot just to test Proton VPN/sysVinit.
Proton VPN was installed from their install .deb file downloaded from their website.
I used Proton VPN for a few days now and everything goes as supposed to.
