Openbox autostart not starting [Solved]
Posted: Mon Nov 18, 2024 7:16 am
by nandi
I have problem starting apps on openbox from
~/.config/openbox/autostart they dont execute.
I installed python-xdg package but the problem still persist.
~/.config/autostart folder desktop files are starting so i can execute apps at startup its more puzzling not to know why is not processing the default file.
This install is an mx 23.4 32 bit fluxbox edition.
Anyone knows what could be the problem?

Can you please post the contents of your ~/.config/openbox/autostart so we can take a look?
--Also, as always, the Quick System Info--thanks.

Thanks. Does nothing on that Autostart work, or only some things?
--This (worked out by
@timkb4cq works for me on Openbox to set blanking, but not sure what your goal is with those multiple commands:
--These bot work for me
<< I listed this last in case it matters
--Nitrogen does not restore for me using exactly that command, and there are complaints on the web about that. I use fehbg instead.

Thank you for the corrections yes i just copied the xset commands from the bunsenlabs forums i tought all thoose need for switching the blanking and for the power save, but sometimes still need to switch it off in xscreensaver if it ends up installed.
No nothing works from autostart
only the xrandr seems to be running
when i paste it to :
etc/xdg/openbox/autostart
Is the user need to be in a group?
I never had this problem on the
64 bit verson of Mx

Have you checked the ownership and permissions? The whole folder while you're at it. (Maybe it's owned by root somehow).

Ok, mine shows
-rwxr-xr-x
So, add the x (execution bit):
(When you opened a terminal within that folder)
or just:
Code: Select all
chmod +x ~/.config/openbox/autostart

Glad to hear it's working now.
You can even add 1-2 more tricks, if you like only:
Code: Select all
#For some transparency (in terminal etc.)
xcompmgr -C -n &
#Sound
/usr/bin/pipewire-start &
#Start fehbg to get last background selected
~/.fehbg
(
sudo apt install xcompmgr )

thats very intresting have you got
good experience with pipewire?
I remember it was not working in a past
with handbrake had to revert it to
pulseaudio true to be told that wasnt
MX Linux.
This Pc purpouse is just to run two programs gtk-pipe-viewer and vlc did not even realised that pipewire is the default sound server on it.

Not that I like Pipewire, just it's the default on MX-23 and it (the whole sound) gets broken if you install pulseaudio (at least here) and try to make it as in MX-21 and before...
Previously I used to use Alsa only (& Volume icon), simple, even not Pulseaudio :) : "Bitperfect" .

yes the volumeicon thats why my Mx 21 got changed to pulseaudio back then i remember now.
What do you use as a volume indicator?

Volumeicon , together with xfce panel currently (was tint2 previously).
Meanwhile your Pipewire already looks active (though you didn't have such an entry) :
Code: Select all
Server-1: PipeWire v: 1.0.0 status: active with: 1: pipewire-pulse status: active
2: wireplumber status: active 3: pipewire-alsa type: plugin 4: pw-jack type: plugin

yes i just looked at it as well when copied over.
i tought about using xfce panel before
stuck with tint2 because its so simple i can just
put shutdown button on it link it to a desktop entry
allow for sudo to run without password for shutdown
and put browser and terminal on the taskbar launcher.
Plank i love so much as well just drag things on it and it looks modern.

Yep. On Fluxbox I still use tint2 (and volumeicon) and a simple design. I just noticed that changing to xfce panel doesn't change ram usage etc. very much and decided to change to xfce-panel on Openbox. (Sometimes I miss the Whisker, though there is the App. Finder :) )

You know i really hope Mx Linux will stay on xorg with openbox and we all can have very speedy systems.
People saying Labwc is almost the same on Wayland well i am not convinced.

I've been testing Wayland with labwc this last week and I have no intention of leaving X11 as a result
