CharlesV wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 3:40 pm I would start with MX Cleanup and look at how many Kernels you might be able to remove.

Keep both the current one, and either the previous one, or the very first one.

After that, I would install Stacer and see where you can clean / clear up. (Logs, cache, trash, etc )
Why Stacer? MX Cleanup can clean old logs, trash, etc. Is Stacer more inclusive?
Stacer has two things that are of interest:
- First, you can *see* which / what is taking up how much space.
- Second, you can *select* an exact thing - so for example you can clear only a large cache or log file.

MX Cleanup is very good - and *really* useful for both quick cleanup as well as removing unused kernels easily. Shines right there! And you have the graphical usage as well.

I think both are great, and I use both slightly differently on their strengths.

Can we please focus, why the popup is showw and not diverting to other tools not provided by MX, where MX provided one might be sufficient.

Stacer IS available in MX Package Installer on the Enabled Repos's page. And I was asked the question and answered it!

And certainly .. focus away

And many good ways to SEE the issue - some other better than others, and some people SEE things differently.

THE issue is that he has space problems - what ever it takes to find the space .. IS the right answer.

Whether the right leg or the left leg gets cut off doesn't matter, as long as a leg gets cut off. Both are ok. Space needs made.

We still don't know what type of popup is shown, b/c mx provided cleanup-notfier-mx,
would only get triggered with having less then couple of 100 MB free space left at /boot.
Yes, gettings now lot's of free space would help, but wouldn't explan to see the resaon for the popup,
and that was the first question asked within this thread.
Maybe related to intels RAID, and only 6% left , but still enough space to function.

saskguy wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 4:09 pm Thanks for the reply. I did run the clean up tool and removed an unused kernel (6.1.0-23-amd64) which is newer than the one I am currently using oddly enough (6.1.0-22-amd64) and also old wifi drivers that together freed up around 500mb of space. However I don't understand why I am receiving this error in the first place, according to the clean up tool I have 12.7GB available on the hard drive where Mx Linux is installed in.

I can't seem to find the program "Stacer", it is not available in the package installer or on flathub, any suggestions on where to find this?
Do you still get to popup, after cleaning?
If yes, please open terminal as normal user and run:

Code: Select all

cleanup-notifier-mx
Pleas post the textoutput here, and also let us know whether the tools creates a popup,
and if yes is that the same popup you have seen?
(Also as mentioned do get rid of the intels RAID stuff, this can create lot of confusion. )
Thank you, I did not receive the pop up after using the MX clean up tool, however as this seems to only clear a small amount of space I will need to understand how to do a deeper clean. I am too scared to change to SATA/AHCI as when I was about to do that in the BIOS I received a warning of potentially not being able to boot my OS and I may need to reinstall the OS. I will look for safer alternatives over that I think.

The "warning" is about Windows. Incase you have Windows, you would also need to tell Windows, to change from RAID to SATA/AHCI.
In case you don' t have WIndows installed, do ignore the warnings and get rid ot intels RAID.
Intel RAID was never real supported by the linux kernel, only recently some attempt have been made,
to let linux run with intel RAID. Some PC, even still wont propeerly run without having RAID turned off.

OK, same question to you. The message you have seen, would look like this:
warning-not-enough-space-on-boot.png
if it was invoked by MX provided tool cleanup-notifier-mx.
Was this the popup message you have seen?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Ok I changed to SATA/AHCI, thank you for the extra information. In regards to the pop up message, yes that is the one! It is no longer popping up but I expect it will in the next 2-4 weeks as the cleaning done by this tool seems superficial but perhaps I need to learn more how to use it.
