Install failing on asrock B650E PG wifi mb system

Just bought asrock riptide mb, 1tb m2 ssd from wd, 8tb barracuda. XFX rx6600 gpu. Drives unformatted but recognized in the BIOS. Fast boot turned off.
I've tried to install several distros using USB stick and they all fail. I have used rufus with many options and a myriad of bios options. I tried mx because this has the advanced hardware support option which I hoped would aid things. I am now using ventoy for the isos so I can have them all on the same disk. I think ventoy is working but still no dice.
I get it to load up the mx linux install screen, then I get to a screen saying checking for boot disk or something like that and it hangs. When I hit F1 I can see it says "loading necessary hardware modules..." but even letting it hang for an hour does nothing.
I was able to get the linux mint installer to work on this machine I am currently using, and install it onto a 3tb disk that I put in the new machine, but it won't boot from that disk.
Q1: do I require internet to install? If not is it better to try without it?
Q2: Could this be a USB support issue? It is fairly new hardware.
Anything else to be tried? Am at wit's end and may have to buy windows for it if this keeps up.

Also make sure secure boot is disabled. If you can, post the Quick System Info with your post.

Yeah I have that off. I can't get to that stage unfortunately.

If you can get the live ISO to boot to the desktop, you can search for Quick System Info.

It never gets to the desktop it is stuck on 'looking for boot disks'.

Some motherboards have boot from USB disabled by default.
A picture of your error would be helpful. It's not clear where you are your being stopped.

Not quite understanding this? Does the thumb drive boot up?
Try F11 to get the BIOS boot screen and select your thumb drive.

It's impossible to take a screenshot and nowhere to save it if I could. The BIO finds the USB and boots. This brings up the ventoy menu and I select mx linux iso. This brings up a menu that is from the ISO and I select the first option which is install mx-64 or something like that. Then it has a black screen with a message and a dot below it, a loading screen. It says searching for boot drive or something like this. I assume this is normal before you go to the desktop but it never goes anywhere. On the bottom left it says ALT+F1 to see boot sequence and bottom right F10 to return here.
If I hit ALT+F1 it shows a few messages and the last is "loading necessary hardware modules" or something like that but it never progresses.
This board is equipped with WIFI which I did not want but it was the only one I could find that had all the other features I wanted. Could this be causing the problem? Is internet REQUIRED for this kind of install? Is it possible to install with NO internet? My guess is that the USB or WIFI is causing issues because I don't even get the installation going on any distro but I am not sure how to check this.

I use Ventoy and these are the steps I use to boot up my ISO's.
From the Ventoy boot screen, select the ISO.
On the next screen, select normal mode.
Now on the welcome screen, set up your Language, Keyboard, Timezone.
Once done, navigate up to the first entry and press enter to boot the live ISO.

Yes, that's what I do then it fails to initialize in the way described. Do you know if it is required to have an internet connection? Is there a way that does not require this if so???

No internet is required at this point. When does it fail? (which screenshot)

I have it solved now. needed to add a line to grub nomodeset by hitting e in grub menu for install. Then it was smart enough to put this into the install with nothing further done. Otherwise it basically just hangs forever.

From these reports at linux-hardware, it appears that this motherboard is still "too new" for Debian:
https://linux-hardware.org/?id=board:as ... a70add983e
Linux hardware lists a number of distros that supposedly work with this motherboard:
https://linux-hardware.org/?id=board:as ... -lightning
but when you actually read the reports, you will see that they all have several problem areas.
Linux generally lags about a year to eighteen months behind Windows in hardware support. My advice to you is to load Win 11 onto your computer (so that at least you will have a working machine) and over the next few months do live session tests of newer distro ISOs as they are released untill you find one that works well.

Not sure why you had to add "nomodset" for an rx6600 card. (which cpu is installed)
I have no problems booting MX-21 and MX-23 live ISO's with my rx6700xt card.

Well, the system isinstalled but I seem stuck in 800x600. I installed windows earlier and that works fine in 1920x1080 so the hardware is at least not defective.

All right, I think that debian and ubuntu distros just won't work for now. I have tried about every distro imaginable and with most of them I don't even get it installed. Thankfully, I finally tried fedora and it installed on the first try with no issues and is also in 1920x1080 mode. Not a guarantee it fully works but all good so far. I think it may be the 8400f ryzen 5 that is causing issues. It is new in april but it is based on old tech and I assumed it would be fine but perhaps not.

You mention "MX advanced hardware support", but that's a separate MX edition; the AHS edition. You have the regular version, with the same hardware support as regular Debian 12.
But maybe all you have to do is tell the kernel to use the amdgpu video driver at boot. I know it's pretty easy, but I forget the command because I've never had to use it myself.
Code: Select all
Device-1: AMD Navi 23 [Radeon RX 6600/6600 XT/6600M] vendor: XFX driver: N/A alternate: amdgpu
You don't need any Net connection to install at all, but your wi-fi works right off.

That was the last resort. After I update AHS version it did not even boot and no output. It is supposed to use radeon not amdgpu, which is the on chip GPU. I believe it is confused about the processor which is new and is recycled from other ryzen 5 processors because of dead onboard GPU (which I don''t want), repackaged as 8400f. I think fedora likely gets the same error but just ignores it and that is why things are OK.

I would enable the ahs repo (MX Repo Manager) then upgrade your mesa package.
My RX 6700 XT card uses the amdgpu driver.

Only the G line of CPU's have on-board graphics. Your F doesn't.

One other thing, Did you upgrade the CPU on this motherboard?
The BIOS for this board needs to be updated to 2.10 to run the 8400F chip and it's still on 2.02.

Having not built a PC in over 12 years I had a few issues on my recent build. 1) I knew about updating the mother board bios but the firmware for the different hardware chips on the MB also need updating. 2) I was unable to boot to anything but a black screen until I used the safemode option.
If need be, Windows can be downloaded from Microsoft and used without activating it for free.
