Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?

Is there a way to reset my nouveau drivers or at least the settings?

I was playing the game (Don't Starve Together) that had caused me problems with my nvidia drivers and it was working great with the nouveau drivers but while playing there was a power failure and ever since the monitor has been bothering my eyes, even on the desktop and on another user. They don't hurt nearly as much as before but definitely make it hard for me to look at the screen and it makes my head and eyes feel funky. Almost like there is some kind of distortion.

Before that I was using the desktop for hours on the nouveau drivers without any problems that I noticed. And when I use my laptop with Lubuntu I don't notice any problems - unless I just previously used my MX computer.

Here is a link to my previous post about the game causing a problem with my nvidia drivers:
viewtopic.php?t=80877

I do still need to test it again using the USB drive.

I also might just reinstall the nvidia drivers to see what happens.

I guess the main thing is just stop playing that game. But it had worked so well for a bit and I thought things were good!

Thank you so much for your time and help.

Rename your displays.xml file in

~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/

and then logout and back in and run displays. That should recreate a default displays settings.

Also, you can check with a new user profile and see how that works.

And - you should mark your linked topic as solved on the post that resolved it :-)

Sharing files between users ? on the same machine - just save files to a common area (ie one that has 'everyone' rights'. (Or put the users into the same group and then assign group rights to the folder.

are you sure its the PC and maybe not the monitor settings that got hosed up? as in onboard the external monitor.

I tried to get driver installed for nvidia GeForce GT 710 from the MX Tools Nvidia Driver Installer. It wouldn't work properly so I had go back to nouveau graphics driver.

CharlieBrown gave a tip on how to do it:

This is after you have the nvidia driver installed and want to go back to the nouveau driver.

On the CLI type in sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

In case you face a black screen on 1st reboot:

Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login manually, then the above command, then sudo reboot .

@CharlesV Thank you for all that info!! I did the display bit and it still seems about the same. At least though with the nouveau drivers it doesn't actually hurt my eyes like crazy which was the problem I had before with the nvidia drivers. I wish I could explain it but for whatever reason it is hard to focus on the screen and makes my eyes and head feel funky and maybe blurry is a way to put it. I was seriously considering getting my eyes checked until I started using my ancient laptop that has Lubuntu and I don't have any problem being on it for long periods of time - unless I've been on my main computer first. But even that fades in not that long.

@dolphin_oracle I wonder if it could be the monitor failing in general. It is kind of old. I did also clean the screen just in case that was it. I also did reset each of the preset settings. If there is anything else I can do I welcome suggestions.

I did try testing it on the USB drive and it seemed to bother my eyes a bit there too. Though I think I should do more testing because if I've been on my main OS for a bit then it bothers my eyes a bit to use any other screen / screen setting.

Thank you @txm0523 !! I don't think I should have trouble reinstalling the nvidia driver. That's something to test again too.

Also I never had any problems with any of this until I started playing that game, with the exception of Stardew Valley, which really hurt my eyes. But with Stardew I installed an "earthy" texture pack and didn't have any more problems. And it didn't affect my desktop, only in game.

So I guess next steps are to test on the USB stick more, test on windows again, and reinstall the nvidia drivers to see if that changes anything.

Is there a way to reinstall the nouveau drivers?

Has anyone else experienced an issue with their monitor like this? I wish I had an extra monitor to test with. I do have some ancient monitors but they don't have a DVI connector.

Any suggestions are super welcome!! Thank you so much for your time and help!!

LCD monitors have a presentation mode to be used be used under the bright lights of the store on the shelf. I don’t know what’s hurting your eyes, but hi backlight level would do it. So if your monitor has a backlight control, you could try to adjust it down.

@PlatinumArts and dont discount the refresh rate... I have had all kinds of complaints, including very close to yours, and a different refresh could possibly help.

@PlatinumArts When I switched back from the nvidia driver to the nouveau driver, it did it automatically. I didn't have to do anything else. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for all of this great advice. I'm testing as many things as I can, including resolutions and refresh rates, thank you @CharlesV for that. I was hoping to test the monitor with this laptop using HDMI but sadly I couldn't figure out how to get it to pick up the display on Lubuntu.

@dolphin_oracle Is there a way to adjust the backlight on MX? I found out how to do it on Lubuntu and I can see the difference it makes.

I am also trying to take into account that my eyes are a bit more sensitive lately because of how bad the pollen has been. The pollen does affect my eyes and so that's why I think it is valuable to test with my laptop vs my main PC.

Some excellent news is as I've mentioned at least since I uninstalled my Nvidia driver, it is no longer is burning my eyes. There is a spot I go to pretty much daily where there are signs in the distance and small lettering that I couldn't read when the monitor was hurting my eyes I can now read. I couldn't even read the big lettering when the monitor was hurting my eyes. Maybe it helps that I haven't really been using that computer much either since it has been bothering my eyes in general.

I did reinstall my nvidia drivers and the effect is the same as with the nouveau but again, at least it isn't burning my eyes like before! I'm wondering if maybe I'm even just picking up too much glare or something small that I'm missing.

The big thing I want to figure out is if it is something with the monitor or an OS setting. Right now I have it booted up on my USB stick and I'm going to wait a bit to test so that my eyes will have had a break. And I should test with the Windows HD too probably. As a note I was able to get that game to screw up the drivers on Windows too with the display setting change.

Thank you again everyone!!!

its unlikely an external monitor has a direct backlight control that MX can use. Not impossible, but unlikely. there are probably controls built into the monitor. that is what I would use.

I did go through all the controls I could find on the monitor itself and all it will really let me adjust is brighteness and contrast and "profiles" like warm, cool, normal, user, etc. There are different presets too like standard, theater mode, night mode, etc.

And thank you. If nothing else I'm learning A LOT!! Which is fantastic.

believe to think this has evolved some with MX - when install nouveau drivers are base. When you install any nVidia driver set there usually is a caveat or Follow up

"To restore open source drivers later use:
sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

hope this may help.. Cheers.

there is actually more should also provide

"For recovery help see
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/nvidi ... l-recovery

if this posts oddly after WIKI / HARDWARE / is in lower case NVIDIA-DRIVER-INSTALL-RECOVERY possibly post filtering is automagically correcting / breaking this url it should be white listed.
It does look funny - but if you "Left Click the link - Right click "Open link in new tab" it all works find otherwise type in lower case possibly even browsing the caps wording in a search should also spider you in to the post.

Could uniformity issues be what is messing with my eyes?

I took a break from it for a few days and right away when I tried it I had problems. Also before I took a break from it I tested it with the USB drive installer and noticed problems.

I tried this monitor test and I noticed that uniformity seemed to be quite off with parts of the upper screen being much darker than lower parts. I took a screenshot and also took a picture from my phone to demonstrate. The settings were at 25% and I shut my blinds with the lights off to try to avoid glare.

I also did the same uniformity test on my laptop and I didn't see any issues. I do notice that the angle I look at things changes things a bit but it seems more than that with that monitor.

I have looked at a few articles on uniformity and "dirty screen" but I haven't found any good fixes yet, except clean my screen, which I did try before I took my monitor break.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? I'll of course be researching myself. And I will try to contact support for the monitor too.

Thank you so much again everyone!

Very definitely it could be part of the issue. Also you mention the angle.. I know when I work on clients machines in person, I see quite a different visual from my higher end large screens. Most of it is resolution, but some people have their monitors very physically low in comparison to mine - mine being up high, and equal to my head.

All that can play on how your eyes are aligned with the monitor.

I tested it on a laptop with Windows 10 and it seemed to bother my eyes. Flux did seem to help a bit. I'm going to let my eyes rest and test again later. The great thing about that test is that I'm using HDMI instead of DVI so that helps to eliminate if it is a problem with the cable.

I did do the uniformity test on there too and it had the same problems.

Regarding angles, I don't notice too much of a different with that monitor but I did notice a little when testing the laptop. I do have the monitor about head height and the laptop is just slightly lower than my head.

Maybe it is time for a new monitor? I'm not sure what else I can do, though I'm going to file a support ticket with ASUS, just grabbed the SN. At least it seems the problem is the monitor so it is getting narrowed down more.

Thank you again for all of this help!! I really appreciate it!

I've started trying an old monitor that I had lying around and it seems a lot better but still makes me feel slightly dizzy / off. It is like my eyes have trouble focusing on it.

I visited my friend for a bit and used his laptop, and on my Lubuntu laptop I have no problems. What could be different between the two?

Thankfully I don't have that issue where it felt like the monitor was burning my eyes out of my skull anymore, just a bit dizzy / disoriented. I did stop playing that game a while ago and going back to the nouveau drivers helped a lot. I did reinstall the nvidia drivers but I haven't played the game and probably won't.

ASUS has been a dead end so far with all the hoops they wanted me to jump through.

What else can I try? I do still need to try the USB boot thumbstick with the old monitor, and I could test it on Windows again.

How do I know if it a monitor is beyond repair?

Side question - if I put my wifi driver on my USB boot thumbstick, will that cause any problems? I see the thumbstick is locked in a way where when I tried to move it on there it said there is no more space, but it is a 16 gig drive and the OS is taking up about 2. It asked me if I wanted to do it anyway but I said no because I wasn't sure if it would mess anything up. I was thinking it would be a good idea to test web browsers and such when using the boot medium to see if it messes with my eyes.

Thank you again for all of your help!

Just a thought... I am bringing my laptop up to mx23 and have encountered a very heavy change in the screen.. and this may help you as it did me.

Go into MX Tweak - Display tab, and turn DOWN the software brightness. Then turn UP your backlight ( or key for brightness on your laptop). I have mine set for Software Brightness: 67 and Hardware backlight: 90.

What this did for me was to 'darken the text' ( kind of a bold ) and made things easier to read. Still working on the green in the posts here - those are still very light.. but otherwise.. everything looks quite a bit better.

Just a bit of an update. The MX Desktop is still bothering my eyes a bit, and that is with using two different monitors so I think I'll reformat. I think the game ended up screwing something up that is affecting both the nouveau drivers and nvidia drivers. Reinstalling the Nvidia drivers still really bothers my eyes. Thankfully with the nouveau drivers it isn't so bad but there is still an issue.

I may have mentioned this before, but I got the game to screw things up in exactly the same way on Windows 7, which was just changing the game resolution screwed up my desktop. I was able to get it back to what seemed about 95% through reinstalling my video drivers.

I have found that part of the problem is my allergies and so taking eye drops and allergy medicine has helped. I did go to the eye Dr and he said my eyes were fine.

However it is still a huge difference in how I feel when using my laptop with Lubuntu where there is no problem at all, and MX. On MX my eyes feel overwhelmed and I even feel a bit nauseous. I have tried to play with the brightness and contrast but I haven't found a good solution. And again I never had a problem until I changed the resolution settings in that game - which also changed my desktop resolution.

Also an interesting thing is I used Steam's "Remote Play" to play the game on my laptop while using my MX PC as the host and it started bothering me on my laptop.

If I was to play that game again, is there a way to Sandbox so it doesn't mess with the settings? Also I was thinking, maybe I could just buy a thumbdrive and use that for games. Is there a way to make the live version have more than 3 gigs of space? Or would I just install the OS on the thumbdrive through the LIVE installer?

Thank you so much for your time and help and I welcome any suggestions! I hope you have a great every day!
