Forum 'Dark Theme'.

Hi all,

Will there ever be a forum 'Dark Theme' option for users of the forum?
Dark themes always seem to be very popular on all other platforms, much easier on the eyes.

All my PC's are set to Dark Themes ( as is MX Linux ) and most of my websites ( and other forums ).
Then I visit here ................. and WOW!!!, I have to take a step back!

Is there a reason why this hasn't been an option in the past? Maybe because the board doesn't have that option?

I use the Dark Reader extension for all the web sites. Set the contrast to 50+ for jet black backgrounds. (not all web sites work...looking at FF add-ons page)

Seconded for Dark Reader. It's available on multiple browsers, has a number of per-site configuration options that work with most sites, and has a relatively decent privacy policy.

Hello @TURK
Firefox and some others SeaMonkey, same family, I can use the dark theme if it is in there also too an addon, Dark Background and Light Text with foreground colour FFDEAD, background colour 3D3D3D the other colours for links viewed and active etc leave as they are should provide an easy on the eye web surf, works on 499 out of 500 sites, there is always that one site that doesn't if so I go somewhere else.

One other extension you can look into is Midnight Lizard.

Privacy is important to me, that and fingerprinting was why I wasn't using them, so I was sometimes using the flags, e.g. "brave://flags/" dark mode, but both apps seems to be fairly private.

Thanks both.

Dark Reader it is guys  I'm using it right now ................ WOW, no need to customise colours or anything. Fantastic right out the box.
As I'm using the Brave browser I thought there might of been some sort of issue, checked-out the Brave Browser Extension library, and there it was.
One click to install ............. and that's it.

Many thanks.

FF Question:

Is there a way to get the FF "New Tab" window to show-up in dark mode?

When I open a New Tab to see all of my shortcuts, there's NO dark mode, even though DarkReader is enabled ("ON") for the new tab.

Maybe FF doesn't allow Dark Reader to work when opening a new tab?

Here's a screenshot:

It doesn't. Settings > Extensions & Themes > Themes > Dark > Enable. You can also look up how to set user.js for very specific customizations.

@DukeComposed : :number1:

Before reading your answer, I saw that DarkReader shows for the FF "New Tab" , at the top and to the left of the "On" button in D.R., "This page is protected by browser".

I just implemented your solution within FF Settings.

Awesome, and Thanks :exclamation:

Added benefit of FF Dark Theme in conjunction with Dark Reader:

Without the FF Dark Theme, just using Dark Reader for a website, when navigating on a website, by updating the page (choosing something on the page, or "next page", for example), there was an annoying flash, where for a brief instant, I could see the bright website page, before it turned dark (presumably by Dark Reader's "magic").

Anyway, using the FF Dark Theme has removed that flashing, or reduced the time of the flash to a negligible level, that it doesn't register on these old and tired eyeballs :exclamation:

Most forums that use the same software as the MX Forums seem to be able to offer a dark theme that works natively (see the Acid Tech theme option on Debian Forums). IMHO, all the browser driven 'solutions' work sub-optimally. As for why it is such a big deal here to offer a theme that better supports old eyes, I have no idea,

So glad that a mere question helped out another forum member ................... I guess that's what we're all here for, to help one another

As a side note; I know that YouTube already has a Dark Theme as an option, but I like what 'DarkReader' has done to the 'Comments' section of YouTube. Each and every comment is now clearly separated into it's own little 'Card'. Makes the comments sections so much easier to read. Love it!

Yes indeed .............. totally agree.
That's why I asked to question in the first place.

Not just 'Old eyes' manyroads .................... but people who ware glasses!
I ware glasses, and for those individuals who don't, they wouldn't believe just how bright a white ( or even an off-white ) screen can be.
