MX not finding sound hardware

Posted: Sun Feb 25, 2024 10:09 am
by Frankarnold
Dear Forum,
MX not finding sound hardware. no speakers, headphone distorted
fedora 39 with same system everything perfectly well
just to add: only fedora finding it, other distros no. Went to MX latest kernel, but no.
Firmware issue? Manufacturer is offering drivers download, could these be used ??

I see that Fedora is using a 6.7 kernel while you are using the 6.1 debian kernel on MX.
I would enable the ahs repo and try installing the latest (6.7-10) Liquorix kernel.
If that doesn't do it, then you are likely correct that it's firmware since both systems are using the same driver and audio stack.

... Or if you like only, most recent ones ("so fresh": just 2 and 5 days old) directly from the original source:
  • Ctrl+Alt+T
  • Code: Select all

    mkdir Liquorix ; cd Liquorix ; wget https://liquorix.net/debian/pool/main/l/linux-liquorix/linux-headers-6.7.6-1-liquorix-amd64_6.7-11.1~bookworm_amd64.deb https://liquorix.net/debian/pool/main/l/linux-liquorix/linux-image-6.7.6-1-liquorix-amd64_6.7-11.1~bookworm_amd64.deb ; sudo apt install ./*.deb ; sudo update-grub ; cd .. ; rm -rf Liquorix ; echo 'blacklist ntfs3' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ntfs3.conf
  • Code: Select all

    wget https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/snapshot/linux-firmware-20240220.tar.gz ; tar -xf linux-firmware-20240220.tar.gz ; cd linux-firmware-20240220 ; sudo cp -R * /lib/firmware/ ; sudo update-initramfs -uk all
Reboot

P.S. This is for an installed system. I see your MX is a live system, therefore you need to enable persistence, or after doing these (before reboot): "MX RemasterCC" then "Live Usb Kernel Updater".

If still not: it might be due to PipeWire v: 1.0.0 vs. 1.0.3

thanks to you, timkb4cq

tried latest kernel, but no. Is there any way i can use the drivers offered by the manufacturer or should this be reported to debian itself? (the drivers are meant for use with windows only i would guess. btw.: even Win11 has the drivers only in the OEM, and will not automatically have them at re-install.).

Thank you charlie brown and timkb4qc for the suggestions
done the homework - even pipewire 1.0.3 from the test-repos, the success is partial: headphones are perfect, the built-in-speakers are recognized but they give only very very tiny sound (barely audible on full volume)... so something is still different as compared to fedora 39

have you checked in Alsamixer in the menu to see if maybe the levels are set low there?

I don't see it mentioned anywhere, so I will ask: Have you tried booting with a SystemD kernel?

if your hearing sound in both headphones and on the board, then your topic is not correct.

You said 'barely audible' ... in a different post it was posted to try these, but you never replied. What happens when you try this?

Code: Select all

#volume set to 75%
amixer -D pulse sset Master 75%

thx to everyone, i went through all the suggestions but to no avail unf.

- latest kernel
- latest pulse-audio
- volume amixer set
- systemD started
- firmware-sof-signed latest
question would be, what is fedora doing differently ??
