MX 23 - Problems installing on HP 8560w & Crucial MX500 1TB

A bit of an odd problem, not quite sure where the root cause lies:

I have an HP EliteBook 8560W:

Installing MX 23 on a 250GB SSD no issues at all.

Installing MX 23 on a Crucial MX500 1TB SSD, install works fine but won't boot, gives a 3F0 error which is related to the hard drive & BIOS.
But, if I boot from the Live USB startup (GRUB?) menu then boot from the hard drive, all works fine.
Tried both BIOS & UEFI modes, no difference.
All installs were done by using the entire disk then splitting / & home using the slider.

I'll try an earlier MX to see if anything changes.

Installed MX23 on the Crucial MX500 SSD in a Fujitsu Lifebook, then put the Crucial SSD into the HP and it boots! The Fujitsu will only work in UEFI mode, so the HP needs that setup too.

The Crucial SSD & the Fujitsu are probably a few years newer than the HP Elitebook, so maybe it's some incompatibility there.

QSI from the working HP:

Unless I am missing something here, it looks like you dont have a UEFI partition on board? I see a VFAT,

If you use F9 on boot, can you select the MX23 partition to run?

That error is basically saying no bootable partition, and if you have selected it in the bios, and then provided the security code, it should work... but not sure how it can without a uefi ... ( feel like i am missing something here.. and dont see it. )

:)

The really confusing part is that it boots when the installation is done on the other pc :)

Yes, that's the interesting thing. If I install MX 23 on the Fujitsu then put the SSD into the HP, it boots without a problem. I looked at Gparted with both installs and can see that installing on the HP in UEFI mode does not set the bootflag on the first partition but changing the flags does not help.
Last night I installed MX 19 on the HP in UEFI mode, it installed and ran without an issue. Today I'm going to try the 'AHS' version of MX 23 to see if that makes a difference.

The MX 23 AHS version installed & booted in UEFI mode without a problem.

The curious thing is that the QSI says it's in BIOS mode right at the bottom, although I'm certain that the system is set to UEFI ( I checked twice), the system will also boot with the same setup in BIOS mode too.

GParted also shows a 'legacy' layout on the disk

It is a legacy (MBR) install. If it was a UEFI install, GParted would clearly show a small ESP partition.

Agreed & that's why I added the screenshot, but the system was set to UEFI. when I installed MX 23 AHS & when I booted before making the QSI & screenshot.
There's clearly an issue somewhere with MX 23, the HP 8560W & the Crucial SSD.

I'm tempted to run the HP in UEFI mode with standard MX 23 built on the Fujitsu, but the HP setup has a warning message about UEFI saying it's 'for developers' so not sure how stable it will be.

I found this tutorial on a successful Ubuntu install on that laptop model. It might give you some insight on how to proceed:

What if you do it manually from the very beginning and all on HP ?
  • Prepare the usb in GPT mode (click the "show advanced options" on "MX Live Usb Maker")
  • Make sure Bios is set to Uefi
  • GParted => "Device → Create Partition Table => GPT" ...
  • Prepare partitions, one fat32 (then right-click on it and put the flag esp (and boot while you're at it which's actually needed by Windows, not Linux) )
... Then go on with the default one, custom install ...

In the meantime these are really valuable feedback to devs, thanks to you.

(Sometimes there are things to correct with the auto-installer part of the MX Installer)

I did try something similar, with an install in UEFI mode after first deleting the SSD partitions, then creating a new GPT partition table using Gparted. I then ran the installer and used that to create / & /home. The installer created the correct partitions but did not add a boot flag on the EFI partition, adding the boot flag did not help.
I'm currently running Mint 21.2 Xfce in BIOS mode. It installed & booted fine but did not create the partitions for root & home quite as I expected so will re-install and will have to run that for a while now as I need the SSD for daily use. I much prefer MX so will keep a lookout on this thread.
It is curious as to why the AHS version I installed earlier today worked while the 'standard' version did not, also odd that AHS installed in BIOS mode while the laptop was set for UEFI.

I have Linux Mint running at the moment, no issues on the install & booting.

This should shed some light on the problem you are facing. From the Arch Linux site:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/HP_EliteBook_840_G1

Note:
-- by all accounts, this is a bios from hell
-- you might need to set up an administrator's password in order to gain access to the needed controls
-- you are going to have to examine the bios for a control that lets you enter the dedicated path to the esp partition
-- your bios dates from 2016 even though the machine itself dates from 2012. This indicates that the HP firmware upgrade has already been applied.

Edited to add that Mint has the ability to make needed changes to the bios. MX does not.

The thing is that I've not had a problem before when installing MX on the HP 8560w. As noted above, I installed version 19 in BIOS mode and it worked without an issue on the Crucial SSD, I did not try version 22 of MX so can't be certain if version 22 will work but version 23 did not work in BIOS or UEFI.
UEFI boot mode on the 8560w is for 'development' purposes according to a note in the setup so not really what I wanted anyway for daily use anyway. I have Mint running in BIOS mode for that reason, but would prefer to return to MX at some point.

Though the installation goes on and completes successfully, it would be interesting to see the minstall.log right after it's complete: how and at what point it changes from Uefi to Bios ... ( /var/log/... also the QSI can be used for that)
