In the usual MX installation I usually change the installation language to Spanish, but in the raspi it doesn't let me do the installation in English, if I try to add a new language I get this error:

fallo-idioma-mxpi.jpg

Best regards
thanks I will look into it. might be in the app itself, not really the pi.

I would also need instructed on how to add our links to a default chromium setup, keeping in mind there is no default browser profiles included, and there won't be.

anyway, if folks want to change, we can make it happen.
Sounds pretty complicated, so I guess we should stay with FF. Some considerations:
1) raspi-config has an entry for browser choice and, IIRC, RPi OS comes with both installed; I made the switch thinking that it might see that the other browser wasn't installed and install iit, but no
2) the RPi people specify chromium-browser: is that the same as what we have in MXPI?
3) I tried to install libwidevinecmd0 after installing the MXPI Chromium but it can't be found. When I tested earlier (I think I was using chromium-browser) it was available so I wrote the RPI Tips to include it. I'll test again.

the chromium pi entry currently installs

Code: Select all

chromium
chromium-l10n
chromium-sandbox
I don't know if that will get you debian's or rpiOS's version. However, we can change the chromium entry on an architecture basis, so just let me know what the mxpi entry should install...

maintaining another package isn't my first choice, but if firefox is unlivable might be unavoidable.

It would be irritating for a Pi 4 user, but if they have used FF with another Pi OS they would at least expect it. Performance once Firefox has started is OK, so perhaps best to leave it as default.

LibreWolf is available from the Package Installer as a Flatpak.

The first time you select that tab, you will be prompted to install flatpak. Once that has completed you can use the search box to find and install LibreWolf. It won't show in the menu until you reboot.

As it's Firefox based, LibreWolf will be slow to start, especially on a Pi 4. Once started, performance seems OK.

I installed chromium-browser and purged firefox, and after the first couple of launches it is clearly much faster. Have it set to a dark theme with a simple DDG search page for startup and new tabs. I will be staying with it for my own system.

Thank you, Chris..I have not yet looked at ''flatpacs' ..but did notice them. Shall do some more reading and use that as an exercise to find out how they work.

Back to the browser question, I have a proposal for consideration:

--install the RPi Chromium straight from the repo as default
--add no bookmarks (I believe RPi does not either--will check), pretty confident that the user will find what s/he needs; it's different from our standard scenario because there is no Live session and everything is essentially in front of the user's eyes. Maybe reconsider a desktop "Help" folder with FAQ, Manual, RPi-Tips and Forum link?
--say in the Final announcement something like this:
Unlike our other MX-Linux versions, MX-23 RPi Respin supplies Chromium as default browser because of its significantly better performance during development testing. Users preferring Firefox can easily obtain it [will they get the RPi version?] with MX Package Installer.
I'm thinking that would remove the extra work DO has described and provide a solid rationale as well for the choice.
