Updates Broke Ghostery Security Browser

I ran today's MX Linux update (25October2023)

Then I clicked Help and About in Ghostery to see if it was up to date.

That, unfortunately, triggered an automatic update.

After a minute it said that a restart was required to install the update.

I logged out of Facebook (and also a scanner app) then chose OK.

Ghostery closed but didn't re-open. I tried the launcher on the panel - no response.

I tried rebooting the laptop - no joy.

I tried launching from Terminal - no joy.

I looked and it appeared that the Ghostery update may have failed - incomplete.

I found "Install the Ghostery browser on Linux" at www.addictivetips.com and installed ver. 10.

Still no response.

I don't know if the attached pictures of the screen help at all. Any suggestions, please?

You might try using Repo Manager in MX Tools to switch your main repo from R.I.T. to the one in Salt Lake City and then try updating again. I've seen enough instances in the past few months where the R.I.T. repository wasn't quite up to date. Remember to log out / in or reboot after the repo change but before you update.

The MX update seemed OK but I can make the repo change, thanks! I'm thinking both updates, without a reboot in-between, may have caused a problem with the Ghostery update. That said - reinstalling Ghostery should work ...

Yes, that would be the proper terminal command to launch it .

Weird then that it doesn't work. It's there in the screen pic from File Manager (previous). Could it be something stuck in a buffer? (I have rebooted the laptop, so they should have cleared.)

I personally use stacer to clear / clean caches etc. There are two - app cache and update cache. Both can be cleaned by the MX Cleanup tool as well. (And probably a little safer. )

You could try clearing / cleaning app and update cache, then reinstall Ghostery, reboot and see it that resolves it.

I copied .ghostery browser to save my history and settings.

Will MX Cleanup ask what to remove e.g. the older and newer installs? Just looked at it and ran it - I see that I'll need to manually delete the old files.

Yes, I think you have to pretty much have to specify ~/cache and Clear APT Cache - All files, ad then logs.

I rarely clear logs or trash. Once Logs gets approx 500mb, then I clear it. And never RIGHT after an update. (couple of day to a week after an update for logs )

In Stacer, I run it typically around once a month, but a week or so after updates - unless I have an issue - then I run it to see about clearing that issue up... and it can make a big difference.

I clear
- Packages Caches
- Application Logs
- Application Caches

I don't know what to try next.

Something is preventing Ghostery from opening ...

So, I see two things that are odd in those instructions.

First, they have you MOVE the ghostery-browser.desktop file to the /usr/share/applications/ folder. And *then* they tell you to run it from your desktop.

I would suggest in a terminal changing to your Desktop folder and then copying that file back.

so open a terminal and do the following:

Code: Select all

cd Desktop

 cp /usr/share/applications/ghostery-browser.desktop ./

This will put a desktop launcher on your desktop. Then, in thunar, go to your desktop and click that launcher there. (it may complain about if you want launch or make it executable - say make it executable. )

You should then see ghostery start. if it still doesnt start, then in a terminal type in

Code: Select all

/opt/Ghostery/Ghostery

and hit enter. and it should attempt to start. If it doesnt start then post the terminal output .

Now, this is bizarre ...

I just clicked on a link in Thunderbird and it opened the Ghostery Private Browsers - with all of the tabs, as I left it.

Meanwhile, qutebrowser is also open.

I'm not sure why T-bird can get Ghostery to run ...

i think your launcher may be bad. The system will recognize the browser and open it. But you need to be starting it from that /opt/ghostery folder.

There was already one in Desktop - now two.

I presume that I need to close the Ghostery that Thunderbird opened in order to properly test this?

Actually, that shows the error. Interesting that thunderbird can open it.

My contents for the desktop launcher.

Code: Select all

Exec=/opt/Ghostery/Ghostery %u
Icon=/opt/Ghostery/browser/chrome/icons/default/default64.png

and I am going to update my vm now to see if I can break it ;-)

/usr/share/applications is the proper directory for application desktop files that should be available for all users, including any applications that are installed into /opt.

It's there.

Question: What mechanism would allow Thunderbird to open Ghostery from a link in an email - but I can't open it from Desktop?

I believe there are three possibilities:
mime setting
default applications setting
and alternatives setting

You can check this from the menu with Default Applications (I believe that changes both mime and default for mail and web browsers)

and then for alternatives, you can check all of them (there probably be more than one for web browsing ) , from a terminal using:

Code: Select all

update-alternatives --get-selections

In looking at the VM I setup for this, I am seeing three places where libmozsqlite3.so is showing up.
/opt/Ghostery
/opt/firefox
/usr/lib/thunderbird

When you reinstalled Ghostery, did you remove the /opt/Ghostery folder?

One more test please... in Thunar, navigate to /opt/Ghostery and then try to launch Ghostery there by clicking on the Ghostery file.

I had tried that prior to, and after, reinstalling Ghostery - no joy then, or now.

So, I have to conclude that the sqlite database in /opt/Ghostery has a problem.

Next step would be to completely delete that /opt/Ghostery folder. (make sure it is gone!) , then I would clear app cache ( mx cleanup) and then reinstall Ghostery as per those instructions you linked too.

I think the reason Ghostery is firing up under Thunderbird is because it also uses that same named sqlite library file. (but a different format) and is causing that issue your seeing.

I'm using qutebrowser at the moment.

Does the error several lines down flag the problem?

Note 1: It doesn't error if I remove "~/" but I don't get a launch icon on the Desktop - nor is "ghostery-browser.desktop" in /home/dmc2023/ or in /home/dmc2023/Desktop/

Note 2: In the install steps it says to do

Code: Select all

$ sudo mv ~/ghostery-browser.desktop /usr/share/applications/
but that fails
mv: cannot stat '/home/dmc2023/ghostery-browser.desktop': No such file or directory
, so I did

Code: Select all

$ sudo mv -u ~/ghostery-browser.desktop /usr/share/applications/
instead. Could that be a problem?

BTW: Ghostery does show up in the MX Linux Menu window when I type "gho" - I didn't try it in case it might mess something up that you want me to look at, first.

Code: Select all

dmc2023@mx-laptop1:~/Downloads
$ touch ghostery-browser.desktop
dmc2023@mx-laptop1:~/Downloads
$ nano ~/ghostery-browser.desktop
dmc2023@mx-laptop1:~/Downloads
$ sudo mv -u ~/ghostery-browser.desktop /usr/share/applications/
dmc2023@mx-laptop1:~/Downloads
$ chmod +x ~/ghostery-browser.desktop
chmod: cannot access '/home/dmc2023/ghostery-browser.desktop': No such file or directory
dmc2023@mx-laptop1:~/Downloads
$ chmod +x ghostery-browser.desktop

K. so those instructions install to the /opt/ folder, but the desktop launcher is moved to that /usr/share/applications/ folder.

K.. at least its now running:-) So, now need to figure out what settings folder is being used on both of those and then how to change one to the right one.(And personally, I would use the new install one!)

I'm in the middle of several projects and have tabs open in the old default files that are needed. It also contains a bunch of sites-visited history that I find valuable from time to time.

K.. so when your ready, I would suggest in both the Menu started Ghostery as well as the Thunderbird started Ghostery, going to Help | More Troubleshooting then scroll down to about:profiles
and find out where both profiles are located.

Close - and then back up both profiles to some other area.

Then, you can make the decision about which you want run, or attempt to point one to the other. (remember, these are basically FireFox data, so the same method of moving profiles works.)

If that thunderbird version is acting weird, then personally I would attempt to use the Ghostery version - and I would back up all the bookmarks and if you use them - then logins, and I would import that data to the other version(the working one) and then use that.

Note: I just observed that profiles.ini in /home/dmc2023/.ghostery browser/ is dated yesterday.

I'll hunt down where the new install put its profiles.ini

Thanks!

The first one is about 977mb - it contains what I want to save.

I'll have to learn/remember how to import from it. (I saved a copy of it yesterday.)

The launcher in the panel is now working.

It's unclear what broke and why, nor what actually fixed it, but it's working now ...

Hopefully, something in this thread is useful to others.

This morning trying to get to any youtube channel would bring up a blank page, turned off "block ads" in Ghostery solved the problem. I guess there was an overnight Ghostery update that causes the issue.

I usually keep all updates set to manual vs automatic - so, I didn't notice an update-triggered problem.

EDIT: Ghostery is up to date. Facebook now won't allow me to log in (via the browser) if either FBCleaner or Stop AutoLoad are engaged. Sigh.

NOTE: I did observe that Ghostery has dropped it's own Search engine and now defaults to the Brave search engine.

I was just reading about this and, since Ghostery is the largest user of memory - by far - I'm wondering if I can force it to use Swap vs Ram?
