FVWM Kise

3 months ago, it was suggested to have a simpler and more elegant set of configs. Similar to FVWM-Crystal’s aim in creating an easy-to-use, elegant, but also powerful desk environment.

FVWM Keep-it-simple & elegant - is a simplified version of Fvwm-myExt collection of ready-made scripts (configs). Kise is an elegant base to use and feature-rich for you to use, modify or add your own. The default Fvwm config file is the base. Currently, there are 25 scripts (configs) of functions, styles, menus, decor, and modules.

MAIN FEATURES:
* Desk Launcher (includes): Iconfied Thumbnails, Windows Overview, Tiling, and Work Desk.
* Work Desk with navigation buttons and 4 Desks with 2 Pages each (Web, Email, Work and Misc. desk).
* Icon/Application Panel
* XDG menu
* Task Panel
* Calendar/Day/Time Panel
* 4-button Window Title Bar
* Page Indicator
* Elegant transparency and shadows.
* Window focus on all desks and pages.

Only 3 months, felt it was much longer. :happy: This is a really, really nice addition to Fvwm. Came alive with many interesting and practical features that help to compute. The Desker Pager with 4 mini-widow desks does what it says to keep things orderly. And with a low RAM use. I think still be lower, I have to check.

This is great with many new things. I think many users don't know what those features do and how they relate to desk and window management. What do iconify and tiling do, and where to edit icon and desker buttons? And, what's the difference between left-, middle- and right-click?

There are many open questions. How about making one short video? And, is there an Fvwm respin? A 5-minute video and quick respin test would be awesome.

There is the old MX21-Fvwm3-myExt-3.1.4-x64.iso. Would be time to update it. One video would also be good. There are many features that will be undetected without seeing what is there.

I tested MX21-Fvwm3-myExt-3.1.4-x64.iso, works well. I am waiting for Kise scripts. For the respin, I suggest to update Fvwm3 to version 1.0.8. In 1.0.6, FvwmConsole has problems. For general use, nobody will notice it. But for script testing.

There is now a major improvement in the Work Desk module (Desker) and also in window management. What has been lacking in Fvwm, is a window focus when changing a page or desk. It required to click-to-focus each time. Other WMs and DEs did it better. For example, in Xfce, the last window is always focused regardless of pressing a button or changing the virtual page. This makes the look sharp and clear. This focus feature is now in Kise, thanks to @amlug

@rasat did you see Mjaakko's screenshot that he posted on Fvwm Forum? He made one great transparent desk with Fvwm RootTransparent colorset. The window has Picom shadow but all other things and icons are fvwm.

I just did an experiment and noticed how beautiful and interesting the desk became.

Got an idea, if total transparency could be put into a button that can switch on transparency when the desk is getting crowded. Same as the Iconify button that iconifies all windows except the focused window. Less distraction.

Version 1.7.0 has feh --bg-scale which scales wallpapers with screen resolution. This looks great....

This also fixes the problem with tiled wallpaper on different Fvwm versions and also some distros. In the new update, 1.7.2, the startup tests different options. If feh is installed, it handles the wallpapers.

Code: Select all

Test (x fvwm3-root) InfoStoreAdd VER "fvwm3-root -r"
Test (x fvwm-root) InfoStoreAdd VER "fvwm-root -r"
Test (x feh) InfoStoreAdd VER "feh --bg-tile"

Kise is updated (1.8.2) with improved startup, XDG Menu, and Keyboard language switch. Also, now Fvwm myExtentions (collection of configs) works with Kise. For example, the Work Virtual Pager config in Fvwm Kise looks and works great. Instead of using the WorkDesk for all, WVP does well for small daily work. I like it.

Did you make this, since it is in community submissions, or is this a review with a request to add it as a package?

This is Rasat's Fvwm project made of individual scripts instead of the classic single config style. Just a zip file to be installed in home/<user>/.fvwm. Not a package but script sharing. Rasat can tell more about it.

It is ok for anyone to announce the version updates. It's faster. :happy: As Mjaakko said, this is script sharing.

It is starting to have everything that I have had in mind. I did more fixes, lowered memory usage, and the Page Indicator got a new system by replacing Menu with FvwmEvent FE. The Desk and Page numbers appear automatically when there is a change.

It would be great to have one video. In Kise, there are so many interesting functions that may be unknown to users. I am still exploring. ;)

v2.0.1 is great update.

Sorry for asking again. I like the videos you made for myExt (two years ago). Kise is new and very different.

Drag-and-drop documents and files onto the desktop is a common feature in Desktop Environments (DE), but not in Window Managers. A full-scale desktop can be somewhat bulky and distracting, with multiple icons cluttering beneath the windows. The solution is to create a mini desktop that can be hidden until needed.

New update (v.3.0.1) includes a mini desktop and Todour managing to-do lists.

- Mini-Desk: drag-and-drop files onto the desktop (requires libfm-gtk4)
- Todour: manage to-do lists.
- Single Decor: for a single window.
- Improved tiling with a gap between windows.
