INSTALLATION NOTES
------------------
NOTE: Disable the CD Sources in your apt sources.list or the install will fail and hang.
Where is located that file sources.list and how to disable CD Sources ?
A CD can act like a repo because it has a lot of files on it that may not have been installed with the system but may be installed later. You don't to worry about this warning. You don't have any CD sources listed in your apt sources/repo list:

Try
1) logging in as root and doing it again OR
2) change your root/superuser (su) password to empty password or something with no special characters
3) when grub menu comes up choose boot to command prompt. Don't go to desktop. Try to install before desktop environment using commandline OR
4) create temporary new user. See if they can install package and plugin

@CharlesV @j2mcgreg Could it be an issue with Python $PATH since the scripts he's trying to run might be python or the way the script is configured for su/sudo as per this:

Hi everybody,
/ I have installed HP LaserJet 1018 Printer under Windows 10 where I can use it, but I would like to use HP LaserJet 1018 under MX Linux, so I will try again following the post: BitterTruth » 2023 Aug 04, Fri 11:40 pm /
I have just created a new user with sudo rights, password without special characyers and did :

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install --reinstall build-essential hpijs-ppds hplip printer-driver-foo2zjs printer-driver-hpijs printer-driver-hpcups

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

sudo password for newuser:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Reinstallation of hplip is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
Reinstallation of printer-driver-hpcups is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 printer-driver-hpijs : Depends: libhpmud0 (= 3.21.4+dfsg0-1~mx21+1) but 3.22.10+dfsg0-2~mx21+1 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
How to avoid above problem ?

HP Laserjet 1018 user here.

1. "change" your root password enter in terminal: " sudo passwd root " hit enter, change your password, confirm and that's it.
You can enter whatever p.w. you want, even the same.
2. install HP toolbox from MX installer.
3. Add printer (presume via usb).
It will ask you to install driver.
Enter p.w. as needed.
In my case, root required p.w. then user name too.

From here:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index

That printer requires a plugin in addition to its regular installation procedure. As a final step, you need to open a terminal session and run:

Code: Select all

hp-setup
which will download and install the plugin for you.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thank you very much !
It is done finally :
1. I downloaded a file: hplip-3.23.12.run into folder Downloads
2. I started a terminal into folder Downloads
3. Ran into the terminal:

@c3p0 - know that feeling of relief.

Had to find driver for this HP printer on Windows and ways to get it to going on various Linux distros (not always successful).

A good printer to keep, as it does not call home to E.T.
