Re: MX-23 RC3 (KDE) Feedback Thread

It works if you start with systemd. It looks like Plasma developers are all into systemd, both Firewall and System Monitor work fine if you boot with systemd.

That's not something we (or at least I) can fix.

Re: MX-23 RC3 (KDE) Feedback Thread

#13 Post by andy »

MX is acting weird on my laptop (logs from install in posts above.)
Firefox and the whole desktop environment become frozen. I switched with ALT+F1 to console, did login and run HTOP, killed FF. I had to kill kwin, too.
(laptop did run fine many months with MX21, even with Windows, but I added another, used SSD, on about 50% TBW lifetime, prior playing with MX23)
So, to rule out potential HW causes, I decided to mess with my main PC.

In this main PC I have added another two NVME SSDs there about a month ago, to be able to not touch the SSD with "production" MX21 later - it resides (currently) on nvme0n1 (the numbering was shifted after the add, because I have swapped SSDs between the sockets 1 and 2. Third SSD is attached via PCI-E x4 adapter.)
On one of them is already new installation of Windows 10, running well. (some gaming). (nvme0n1 currently, in the socket 1)
The third, nvme2n1 is still virgin.

And here my woes begin:
RC3 KDE did install, but apparently there is problem with GRUB or efivars. (no entry was added).
I even wasn't able to trigger boot with rescue menu of live medium (maybe because of Ventoy - I will supply the error later here:)
I made bootable USB with MX-LiveUSB, booted:
Boot Rescue Menus -> GRUB-EFI bootloader ->

Code: Select all

mx @[fat] (hd4,1)/EFI/mx/grubx64.efi
boot @[fat] (hd4,1)/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi
boot @[ext_] (hd4,7)/grub/x86_64-efi/grub.efi
Choosing first two options yield "error: not a valid root device."
Choosing third booted functional system.

I see I can try reinstall grub from the commandline, should be pretty easy but I have to sleep. So maybe tomorrow.
Anyway, installer is broken with my setup.

My layout on that added SSD is a bit unconventional: I pre-made 500 MB EFI partition (nvme0n1p1) about a month ago, when I was installing Windows, but somehow Windows refused to use it, and made its own 100 MB, as the second partition.
Now, I was telling the installer to use that 500 MB partition for GRUB.

Please, if you need more info, ask me. I really DO want to use MX23, and still am unsuccessful.

Here are the logs:

Re: MX-23 RC3 (KDE) Feedback Thread

#14 Post by BasicSloth »

I found a detail. I took Switzerland as localization in the installer. I checked the configured paper size with

Code: Select all

cat /etc/papersize
and the result was "letter".

That is not a Problem which is related to MX-23. I experienced that also on my MX-21 System. I know the issue is easily fixed by the user with

Code: Select all

sudo paperconfig -p a4
But to be honest as I switched from Windows to MX-21 that was the point which annoyed me most. Everything else worked so fine and smooth, but my prints and my scans were borked because of that. I really think, that the paperconfig should be set correctly by the installer according the chosen localization.

Hello @dolphin_oracle,
because above mentioned problems I was trying to use MX-BootRepair (again),
but, this reminds me as it always was: it was never able to unlock LUKS container in MX-BootRepair. Even if unlocked outside of it, it does not recognize root. Never ever worked for me on encrypted drives - 1, 2, 3 years in the past.

Is MX-BootRepair supposed to work on encrypted drives?
(I have still left /boot partition unencrypted, but it would be nice if the tool worked even in the case of encrypted boot.)

You made a wonderful installer, perfectly customizable, which opens the world of encryption even to "less power users",
so it would be nice to have this tool functional for them, to help them maintain their encrypted system.

Thank you in advance,
Andy

Network shares can be accessed without entering credentials. This is different to Xfce/Fluxbox versions.

Video cannot be played from a network share. Again, this differs from the other versions.

Neither of these are show-stoppers, but I thought worth mentioning.

My first real hardware install (VMs running fine), so far everything works. Even tried Wayland.

Grabbed a screen shot of the "squished log out screen" mentioned a few messaged back. As you can see the user name "Media Maker" is right on top of the icons (more space needed to even it out). I am using 16x10 monitors so that is possibly a factor.

Also the other two items I mentioned are not on MX. I will edit my original post to make that clearer.
