The monitor knows it's plugged in and when it's unplugged (from the HDMI port) in MX, and it works in when I boot the laptop into windows.

Is there a way to remove the current display app and install the latest for a non-plasma version or will that screw things up more?

Mx Tweak has very few settings to adjust in plasma.
