Old laptop I had to dig out of storage because my main died. When booting up linux, for some reason it switched from the default desktop (xcf or whatever it is called) to something weird that I really can't use easiliy.
How to change the theme in MX quickly and easily to reset it back to the original?

Important information
--If in starting your system it boots to an unwanted Desktop, right click desktop, then select leave and logout. At the
login screen there is a session chooser at the top of the screen. Choose the session you want (probably Xfce) and log back in. the choice will be sticky.

Easiest solution is to backup all your data (including all of your bookmarks and passwords in your browser). Then write down all the programs you need on a piece of paper.
Your old laptop likely needs a re-install to the latest version of MX Linux, so download the iso, and either use MX's live USB installer, or use Rufus if your're doing it in Windows. Then do the install, restore, and you're all set!

that is not the easiest by far.
logout, choose the Xfce session, and login. this is a 5 second operation that many users completed months ago. there is a "Important Information" about it up at the top of the forum. mostly affected mx19 users but its possible to be affected elsewhere. the need to choose session is one time. grasshopper didn't provide any quick-system-info, but this is likely the issue, being its a laptop that hasn't been started up in a while.

It's possible this is a corrupted install, or that their hard drive is having issues. If you can't see the option to change desktop environments after logging out, that's a good indicator something is wrong with the install. Also, systems don't normally change desktop environments on their own.
A format/reinstall is easier on an inexperienced user than trying to diagnose a hosed system, from my experience (I was a System Admin for 40 years). It's also why backups are so important, since software can become corrupted easily (for example, if you have a unexpected shutdown).
