Your old laptop likely needs a re-install to the latest version of MX Linux, so download the iso, and either use MX's live USB installer, or use Rufus if your're doing it in Windows. Then do the install, restore, and you're all set!
logout, choose the Xfce session, and login. this is a 5 second operation that many users completed months ago. there is a "Important Information" about it up at the top of the forum. mostly affected mx19 users but its possible to be affected elsewhere. the need to choose session is one time. grasshopper didn't provide any quick-system-info, but this is likely the issue, being its a laptop that hasn't been started up in a while.
