Cannot reinstall Nvidia drivers

Hello,
I'm a long time MX user, and I'm facing a very annoying problem I cannot solve.

I have an MX 21.3 install that works well on my desktop. I uninstalled Nvidia stable drivers because I wanted to test Nouveau again. I used the

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
command and rebooted. And it works well with Nouveau, except second monitor isn't detected and video playback in Firefox has tearing and uses 10% CPU.

No big deal I say to myself, I'll reinstall the driver with Nvidia driver installer built in MX. But it fails and boots to a blinking cursor. I tell myself again, no big deal, I'll fix that by opening the console. But I cannot open it with ctrl+alt+f1, it stays on the blinking cursor despite the HDD led activity blinking/caps lock working.

I tried reinstalling from a snapshot I made before the incident, and it boots normally, but display resolution on live system is broken due to the fact Nvidia driver is installed. So I installed MX from the assistant, rebooted to a blinking cursor again, BUT this time ctrl+alt+f1 allows me to enter the console. I then tried to find

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
but it wasn't there, only an X11 directory in /etc .
I ended up running

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
again and restored a perfectly working system with Nouveau. Tried reinstalling Nvidia stable drivers and I went straight back into the loop, blinking cursor at reboot, console not accessible, forced to reinstall from snapshot.

Note 1 : Last update on Nvidia driver went on without any issue.
Note 2 : Nvidia driver issue when uninstalled and reinstalled has always been there, I just forgot about it leading to the current issue. I no longer have a snapshot made before I installed Nvidia drivers, that worked perfectly. First install of Nvidia drivers always works.

My system uses MBR to avoid messing with my Windows drive (EFI supports both legacy and EFI boot, wasn't an issue so far).
Here is my system report :

nvidia-340 driver on Ubuntu 20.04
https://9to5answer.com/nvidia-340-drive ... untu-20-04
Generally, nvidia 340 driver installation I usually reference this article.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic
This is the important part.

I don't know if it will help in your case, but
I had a hard time too, but this command worked very well.

Sorry if it's not 340.
Your "GeForce GT 1030"'s driveris might newer version.

nvidia-driver 510.108.03-2~mx21+1
without issues so far.

is that log edited? I see the removal, but not the reinstall attempt.

510.108.03-2~mx21+1 is the current version.

I had to reinstall the snapshot to get a running system. I'll reinstall drivers and get you the log with a live USB.

I'm going to suggest install mx-debian-firmware, then apt install -f

for whatever reason, your installation of the nvidia driver isn't quite finishing.

What happens when you load up a persistent LiveUSB of MX and install the Nvidia drivers there?

I may be dumb but I cannot make the LiveUSB persistent despite choosing the right option with Live USB creator.
In all cases a fresh install works with no error message and displays modsetting as a driver after reboot in system info.

I installed mx-debian-firmware, then ran apt install -f (the later had nothing to do), but it worked, install is no more borked at reboot.
Now I'm running modesetting dixit system info and dual monitor works. Seems mx-debian-firmware did it.

Thank you for your precious help, I was mad just thinking of all the custom stuff I had to reinstall on a fresh copy, that's quite a relief :number1:
Edit : I had no idea more firmware packages were needed, as this is AHS version with AMD microcode, firmware-iwlwifi and all that jazz.
Edit2 : it also fixed the boot progress theme that was a black screen before.
Edit3 : Seems I'm still using Nouveau somehow, but it now works fine. Might as well keep it this way.

I am having the same problem.

Yesterday I was unable to install the Nvidia driver after running a systemupdate so I re-installed Nouveau to be able to work. Today ran the MX Nvidia driver installer without problems except that the nvidia driver is not loaded. Nouveau seems very persistant.

Searching the nets I tried a solution creating a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf file with

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
in it and then run

Code: Select all

$ sudo update-initramfs -u
this did not help, I booted in terminal mode without x. Removing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf file solved this new issue.

What now?

Hello again,
I'm quite happy with Nouveau, but I don't like staying in the dark so continuing. So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, and this time no error in the ddm.log (attached).
But after reboot, no sign of the Nvidia driver being used.

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

I had no simlink to nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ so I made one and updated initramfs, and broke X.
Xorg log says failed to load nv, and messages.log says loading nvidia-modeset, then initialized.
Reverted changes from the console. I'm confused.

(Previously) : Installed

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mx-debian-firmware
per DolphinOracle recommendation, fixed Nouveau and console access
(Previously) : made simlink

Code: Select all

sudo ln /etc/nvidia/current/nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf

Made a simlink

Code: Select all

sudo ln /etc/nvidia/current/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
Also choose

Code: Select all

update-glx --config glx
and forced Nvidia manually
Image

Updated initramfs with

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u
Finally works. Dunno what happened, it's supposed to work automagically

Code: Select all

thanks for the solution, but that is bizarre.

For your information, new driver update today reverted my install to "nouveau, vesa".
Reinstalling drivers with the assistant fixed it, but I had to delete the two simlinks I had created previously because it was saying "broken glx links group".
