Hello,
I bought a very cheap notebook on Amazon with the Chromebook system already installed, i have not idea if it is possible to install Linux on this thing ... -- on the keyboard, on the top, the F1, F2 ... etc, keys do not exist.
How can I access the Bios, if any, to install Linux?.
Lenovo N22-20
Model: 80SF
Thanks

While there does appear to be a method, it doesnt look like there really is a *good* way to install linux on it ;-/

Just bought me one of these.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/204099018195
I am sure if you contact the seller. They would install MX on one for you.
About us:
Well hello there! My name is Randy and I have been a Linux nerd most of my life. If you have any Linux related questions please feel free to ask. I always enjoy a good, nerdy conversation :)
Just like you, we appreciate a great customer service experience. If you have any questions, or if you would like to see photos of the exact unit we will send you before purchasing please don't hesitate to message us. I am always happy to help :-)
I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH THE ABOVE SELLER OTHER THAN i PURCHASED ONE AND IT WORKS AS ADVERTISED. I just think it is easier to buy something I want that is not a scam . Price is right. And the cost was about 5 lb bag of loose tobacco.

I'd follow the instructions at GalliumOS and their links.
https://galliumos.org/
https://wiki.galliumos.org/Hardware_Compatibility
++EDIT++ GalliumOS has been discontinued!
You may be able to install GalliumOS or MX, but the process should be very similar to CharlesV's link, i.e. you may have to flash the bios, install another BIOS/bootloader (or whatever) Coreboot, or another one.
IIRC, GalliumOS site refers to two (2) different methods, one was CharlesV's link, and another one which was what I used.
Of note, GalliumOS is supposed to be tweaked for Chromebook touchpads.
They also have links for setting it up other programs often found on a Chromebook, Google Drive (GD), etc. - then add Google's extensions, Docs, etc. to sync with GD.
Personally, I'm slowly veering away from all things Google but I do have some old files, etc. on GD.

I already ordered it, I didn't know that this could be achieved with Linux pre-installed, this one is a Kali, I left a note to the seller to see if he could install MX-21, anyway, Kali is based on Debian.
Thank all of you very much for the cooperation and best regards!.

Yeah. You don't wanna run Kali if new to Linux. That 16 gig ssd is a bit small when installing kali-linux-everything if you put any personal files 1st. The drive will fill up and error out in apt. I corrected my errors with moving my personal stuff to a 32 gig usb drive I plugged into that Dell chromebook. Then did the apt song and dance to settle things back down.
Anyways. I hope he answers you back and says no problem to installing MX 21 on there. Let us know if he does. Others might be interested.

The title of this thread is way too general; can the OP or a mod change it to Chromebook?

Well. I guess it is up to the OP. Because I can only lock, delete, move, split. Everything but edit. Under thread tools on the end of this page. Topic tools button is pretty limited also.
Silly me. Edit button is at top of thread post. Done.

Stevo, what I want is, to install on a notebook that comes with Chromebook, a Linux system, preferably MX-21. -- but the solution offered in the link above is practically impossible for me, very complicated.
EDIT:
In case anyone wants to know, at least on eBay you make the selection of the Linux operating system that the notebooks already have installed when you place the order, they have an option/selector, I did not see any with MXLinux so I went for a Kali since the other offerings, Mint and Ubuntu, at least for me are all a mess with the packaging system, the PPA, etc ...

Go to /mrchromebox.tech/#home and follow the instructions to install coreboot. When you are finished, you will have a notebook ready to install whatever linux you want, even Windows.
Only problem I have is the small ssd(16gig) that might limit what you install. I used a snapshot from one of my nicer rigs that has a ton of additional software on it and it still fit.The other i issue I had was a lack of a legacy boot option, so it is uefi only--not really a problem.
I wish you good luck with yours.

Well. With Kali. You will have to turn tap on in touchpad xfce settings under mouse settings.
Then. Either stick with user kali and it's password. Or. I deleted user kali, added my user, and added my user
to groups, sudo and root accounts.
Wifi connection was simple. Add a usb drive for personal stuff. It will auto show on xfce desktop as a icon. You can mount and unmount it from there.
I did what Earl57 suggested a while back on a Acer C710 chromebook that finally broke down. It powers on for about 3 seconds and then powers down.
Only difference was I ran antiX on mine instead of MX. On these Dells I recommend. The bios change is already done. He can install MX any time he wants to on that Dell after he gets it.

I don't think I understand this well, I'm not an expert but rather a Linux curious person.
When I go to the address bar what I get is a page to download GalliumOS.
Does this mean that the Gallium OS is going to download and to be installed on Chromebook, just like that? (i means as a dual boot)

@keos
No it won’t be installed “just like that”.
Find your model “Lenovo N22 Chromebook” under:
https://wiki.galliumos.org/Hardware_Compatibility
and refer to the chart and info; but I’m afraid you’ll have to be a little more linux curious to know what to do to accomplish this as you have to read and search what to do.
This can all be found Googling, but CharlesV’s link and my links should more than get you started.
The suggestions and references were just a place to start to find whether you needed a new BIOS and things like CharlesV’s link suggested with removing screws as you’ll likely have to modify the chromebook to install linux on it.
My main point was, once you get to the step where you can install GalliumOS on it, you could probably install most linux distros on it, or GalliumOS.
I don't necessarily recommend nor really discourage GalliumOS for chromebooks.
Good luck

Well, now I think I understand ... no, that is not for me, I would not know how to continue, I do not know even the operating system ... it's definitely impossible for me, I lost my money with this google garbage.
Any way, thank to all of you.

Good to hear. You would not have been thrilled using Kali. I just broke my Kali install by deleting /swap partion and trying to grow my / partition while running kali.
Was real easy to make a antiX live usb and I used gparted to fix it. Did a file system check in gparted to fix it.
Thanks for getting back on this. Other members might wanna know. Me? I just hit the esc key. Picked usb boot. Booted my antiX 21 full iso on this Dell. No problemo.
Working desktop, wifi, and all. Only kept kali on here out of curiosity to see if my fix worked. Looks like it did.

An unexpected incident occurred that I want to put on record here so that it does not happen to someone else.
The seller had already sent me the order, according to what he explained to me they (eBay) fine him if he takes too long to send .... and I was delayed the issue ... I had not put the note at the time of purchase, so I will receive now the system with Kali installed.
However he asked me something that although it sounds familiar I don't think I understand it very well: "Can i send you an install drive mx+xfce to you?" I answered yes ... I will see exactly what it is about.
Anyway if this thing already have kali installed ... no BIOS problems, I can install MX-21 from a pendrive, can't I?

That is right. Insert your MX 21 live usb in the usb slot. Open the netbook and hit the escape key. A bios screen will come up.
It will have a boot order line. Pick usb and boot. MX 21 will show on your screen instead of Kali.
I am hoping you are familiar enough with the installer to take it from there.
Might want to leave the 1 gig /swap partition alone also during the install process.
Might help if you use sleep alot.

Can you do me a favour? Can you ask a seller for an email? I would like to arrange to get MX installed before I place an order. I think I will order two, this is great price!

Partially off topic, @rokytnji.1 since you already got computer, is there any chance to upgrade internal SSD or whatever it is to bigger size? 32 would be perfect :-) It is probably non-replaceable, but asking just in case. Will order regardless, though.

It appears both ram and ssd are of the soldered in variety on this model. You do have the option of adding SD card storage not sure what is the largest supported size for that media but shouldn’t be hard to look into online. I keep a 32 gig usb drive in mine.

@Buck Fankers,
You can be able to communicate with the seller when you are placing the order through a messaging section on eBay, there you can ask Randi, the seller, to install MXLinux for you, but anyway i think, as rokytnji.1 said, it is not going to be difficult with kali already installed ...
I have not received mine yet, I will let you know ....

Luckily, you can communicate with the seller (ask seller question) without placing order. I forgot you can, haven't used ebay for years. I send seller a msg, and asked to prepare two with MX for me. When they are ready, I will place an order. :-)

Well thank you, I'm new to eBay, I'm always used to buying from Amazon, that's why I made the mistake ... I still don't understand their site very well, I have to check much better to see how to contact them before placing orders.
Anyway, I am supposed to receive the laptop this Tuesday. As soon as I see the issue I'll leave a note here about how it went with the change of the kali>MX installation, in case anybody ...
Regards.

The Notebook arrived today, ahead of time!.
It was coming with Kali installed. I was considering not to install MX since Kali has Xfce4, but after an update and restart the system, kali broke down -- enough reason to me to start immediately the process to install MX-21 / Xfce4.
There was not much problem for me, except at the beginning ... i was going in circle trying to find the right way/option to boot with the USB into the BIOS... probably because i'm not fluent in english, till finally i found the 'how'.
The system is already installed and updated, it was all ... -- I'm writing now from the notebook!.
Good luck!!

Good for you!
Update from my side. I asked seller, if he would install MX. He said he will. I ordered two in case one breaks soon, since they are old used devices.

My update. I sent msg in advance asking, if I can get XM Xfce installed. I got both machines today with MX pre-installed, yay! These are old machines, I expected battery life to be near end. Well surprise, they are both in very good shape. For how old computers are, I though they would be slower. Well, MX sure helps here. Bottom line I'm glad I ordered two for this price.
Few years ago, I bought Samsung Chrome at Black Friday for 99$, converted it to MX. I tried many distros, and only 2-3 are working on it, most distros antiX included, don't properly work, can't get keyboard to work. MX works the best, but I could never get microphone to work, so I can't use it for keeping in touch with family by using Jitsi.met videoconferencing. And If watching YT video with any browser, browser will occasionally crash. Well more often than not. I understand, it is hardware designed for Chrome OS and some drivers in Linux kernel are just not the best fit.
Well I'm so happy, these two cheap former Chrome machines works so good! Thank you again @rokytnji.1 for mentioning this great deal!
Seller is super nice, super friendly and ships very fast.

Well. Mine is a antiX chromebook now. I had to do some hoop jumping though.

Don't know if any of findings are needed in MX though.
