I have been struggling with this issue with my sound for some time, and it has made it impossible to listen to any audio/video as well as take Zoom/google meet calls in MX. All sound works as it should in Windows 11.

Whenever I go to listen to a video or play music, I get the sound for about 1-4 seconds, and then my speakers (or headphones) quickly fade away with a buzzing/fuzzy noise. Sometimes this will happen when I log in, and it will always happen when I pull up a website that has audio (for example, youtube).

In pavucontrol, I have the option of choosing between the following:

HDA Nvidia Digital Stereo HDMI

sof-hda-dsp HDMI-1 Output

sof-hda-dsp HDMI-2 Output

sof-hda-dsp HDMI-3 Output

sof-hda-dsp speaker + headphones

If I choose HDA Nvidia, it remains on that output. If I choose HDMI-1, 2, or 3, then my output automatically goes to speaker + headphones. Alsamixer only shows outputs under the sof-hda-dsp option (Nvidia has it's own entry, but no way to adjust volume levels).

I tried using pipewire a couple of weeks ago, but no joy as well -- completely lost all of my sound. I just did a fresh install of MX 21, so no pipewire packages currently on here. I'm open to exploring it again, but if I can find a solution via pulse, that's fine with me too.

--You have 4 soundcards? Why? I mean do you need them all? (if not, you can disable the ones you don't use)
--When you say you choose a card, are you using the "Select sound" in MX Tools?

Nothing to lose:

Reboot.

This has a known side-effect: Mic. may not work. But at least you can test if others are better or working...

In Alsamixer press F6 select card: Intel ... then F5 all, then play with the bars (M from keyboard to unmute/mute)

Thanks for the suggestion -- I created the sound.conf file, and got my speakers and headphones back. You were also correct, I lost my microphone -- the attached image of my alsamixer shows that I don't have the option to adjust my volume levels on the microphone. (Hope I attached it correctly.) Do you have some additional suggestions?

With all that I'd get a dac box for sure. Shiit makes the Fulla for $109 and it has headphone out and mic in via any usb port. Plug n play audio and has a spdif input also. USA baby.

So glad to hear it worked.

For the mic. , you just need to play with model=... in the below formula.

model=laptop-dmic (You can skip this one as you'll have tried as the 1st one)
model=headset-mic

As the 1st trial :

I was going to write this as the first thing to try , then gave up as 5.18 was also not very old.

On some distros it works with 5.19 then not again with 6.0 ...

So, you can first remove the conf file (to prevent confusions) then install them and reboot and try.

... If you first try 6.0 then install 5.19 later, then you'll find it in "Advanced Options" in Grub to boot with.

If it's the same with all, just boot with 6.0 , then "MX Cleanup" from menu, remove others (not a must) with "Kernel Removal Tool" below (or with MXPI same way of installation). (...Then you can try the above again, posts #3 and 7)

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'd like to try the 6.0 kernel, but it is not currently listed in my MXPI. Do I need to switch to the sid repository to get access to it? (DIdn't see it in the MX Test Repo either.)

Just thought of an additional question in response to your previous posts as well. Why the need for two sound.conf files in my modprobe.d folder?

Well this is frustrating. I lost the sound again, even after generating the sound.conf that initially worked. So generating a second sound.conf to handle the microphone isn't going to move the needle much since I don't have any output sound. I'll try upgrading to 6.0 (currently in kernel 5.19). And I'll try rebooting into kernel 5.18 to see if that at least fixes the speaker issue.

UPDATE: I'm a doofus, didn't think to look for the kernel in the regular repos or in synaptic. Installing kernel-6.0 now.

Just an update & upgrade with the updater will make it appear (or in a terminal: sudo apt update ; sudo apt dist-upgrade -y )

In fact, the reason I gave up suggesting a newer kernel: there was just 5.19 and 6.0 is "so new".. it was announced (and appeared to me) just those minutes ...

We could make them in the same file (previosly I was suggesting the command that way). This is just to make it easy or tidy.. Cause one is to make it use the older snd-hda-intel driver rather than sof-... and the other is to tell the system use this or that option about snd-hda-intel ..

Consequently: First remove the files as mentioned, then see what happens with just the kernel(s) 5.19 or 6.0 (with the driver: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl ).. Then if it's not ok: Create the sound.conf, then the other one (sound2) and play with the model=... part only )...

Update: sound for speakers/headphones is now working natively in kernel 6.0. I created a sound.conf file for the mic with the first option you suggested, and it works (!), I just need to adjust my volume level manually in pavucontrol panel. Before I mark this solved though, I wanted to understand the issue better.

How do I find out more about the sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl driver? Is this a recently new driver compared to the snd-hda-intel driver?

What are the drawbacks/benefits of dropping down to the older snd-hda-intel driver for handling my microphone?

Should I expect the driver firmware for the microphone to eventually catch up with newer kernels so that I don't need to continue to use snd-hda-intel?

Thanks for all your help. The great/quick responses from the MX community are what has kept me on this distro the past few months. (That, and the fact that the ahs spin was the only one to natively enable my wifi for installation :-)

Just to make it clear: Was mic not working natively (and then you decided to create the sound2.conf file?) (... Otherwise you don't need both files)

1- Yes, it's an open-source firmware (one can also manually install/upgrade but generally that doesn't work, too)

2- You can use whichever you like, sound may be better or noisy or weak etc. with this or that one. The only con about the older one is that you may need to find such (aforementioned) workarounds to make mic. work, too.

3- You can (actually: do ) install newer kernels (just occasionally check the MXPI) whenever they're available, as your hardware is new. (Though 6.x will be LTS it won't be auto-upgraded.. you can simply install, say 6.1 or 6.2 when you see them).

You can see which driver is in use at the moment in QSI or simply in a terminal: inxi -Aa

(If the sound.conf is staying there, then it's snd-hda-intel )

P.S. When everything's according to your liking , all working fine: don't forget to run "MX Snapshot" from menu and create "your own" iso. That's one of the best things any user can do :)

Sorry for the late response. Two steps forward and one step back -- I lost my sound again, even after creating the sound.conf file to drop down to the older intel firmware.
