Looking For HP All-in-one printer/scanner

I'm looking for an HP All-in-one printer/scanner for home use. Anyone have any experience, the good, the bad, or the ugly with the Deskjet 2700 series? I see that Walmart is selling the 2742e for $59. My needs are basic, mostly b/w printing and occasional b/w scanning.

Well, not sure what is available now but.. I do not like the three color cartridges. As soon as one color is gone you need to replace the complete cartridge and they are not cheap.

Using an old Photosmart 5522 myself with separate color cartridges saves a lot, especially using some private label cartridges selling for about $10 a complete set of four..

The color inkjet DeskJet printers will cost you an arm and a leg in money and heartache to keep it in ink. On the other hand, I have loved my HP LaserJet 3055 for 12-13 years. Supplies are cheap and never had buyer's remorse. I don't know what today's equivalent would be, but pay a little more now and save for the rest of your live.

The HP LaserJet 3055 is both PostScript and PCL compatible and well supported by Linux. I can buy a pair of 3rd party toner cartridges for less that $50 US.

Well.. you have to get a new one sometime (as in old ones will get phased out/not available, etc). That printer is ok, but I do prefer one with a touchscreen which is so much easier to set up. Also if you want to print envelopes I wouldn't recommend the 2700 series, my dad bought one last week and returned it, for eating the things. Envelopes are a thing for him, now has an officejet. But I helped him set up the two (on Windows, but didn't make much difference setting up), and the touchscreen printer was SOOO much easier to do.

I have an Envy 5030, after checking out the compatibility with Linux, a long time ago. Never regretted it. Would get an Envy again in a heartbeat. Then again I have the same needs, mostly just plain jane printing, occasional scanning.

As far as ink is concerned, never EVER get the off brand ones for the HP, you'll end up with an expensive paperweight. I saved quite a bit of money going with InstantInk in that area. It's actually one of the reasons why my dad went for an HP as well, after I calculated things from my system, cost wise.

In the end I'd recommend HP any day, and install HP Printing from the MXPI. Hope you find what you want :)

I have an HP printer too. But an Envy. It was also cheap. What is very good is that it also works when I only put in the b/w ink without colour cartridges because I mostly print b/w.

But what I really miss with this cheap printer is the following:
-I can't change the brightness when printing. (only when copying). I would like to set the brightness a little brighter to save ink.
-And I can't change "gamma", which leads to too dark b/w images.

With my next printer I would probably make sure that gamma and brightness can be changed, even if it is a bit more expensive.

I do have a totally different experience. First of all: inkjet printers are not exactly expensive. I wonder what they really cost to produce, imho they are just given away, with partly filled cartridges only to make you dependent on their overpriced cartridges. A single (single color) cartridge easily costs $15 over here so just four of them (a complete set) already cost a dollar MORE than the printer including (partially filled) cartridges.

Using my own printer for many years now with off brand cartridges I never had any problem. Of course not all brands are the same but I might have been lucky finding (and sticking to) a very reliable alternative. And price wise? I get the whole set (B/M/C/Y) with even more ink than the HP XL ones for just $10.

Of course without limiting the print quality.

I have had good luck with HP printers until the 4100 series all in one printer. HP quality has fallen. Paper doesn't feed correctly since the paper feeds from the top in the back and no longer from the front. Ink cartridges dry up quickly if not used. If you choose a HP printer, make sure the paper feeds from a tray at the bottom and not like mine from the top in the back.

According to the HP Developers Portal that printer should work fine:

I don't know what you pay for one in your country, but I find the equivalent of US$90 expensive. You're welcome to donate to my paypal though ;)

Since we both seem to live in The Netherlands I expect similar pricing..

The 364XL cartridges cost €97,99 for a complete set so by using an alternative I save €88,00 (yes: a complete printer!) every time and even getting more ink..

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. I've been using an hp Envy 4500 and I liked it but the scanner stopped working. I'm looking for a similar replacement for under $100 that other linux users have had success with. The HP Developers Portal lists printer series, like the 2700 series, but I would feel more comfortable if I knew that a specific model was compatible with linux and what other users experience has been.

The current version of HPLIP installed in MX is 3.21.4. As long as you select a printer that uses a version older than that (according to the Developers Portal), you can be assured that it will work with MX.

HP is very explicit in their documentation that their HP+ printers must be connected to the internet to set up and remain connected in order to function. That's a show stopper for me if that applies to using their printers with linux. Can anyone shed any light on that requirement?

Requirements for HP+ printers:
Keep the printer connected to the Internet HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates. During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must also still be connected to the Internet.

I am definitely not an expert -but- from the walmart add I read:

"HP+ Smart Printing System – The optional HP+ system enables your printer to think ahead so it’s more secure, more productive and ready when you are. Requires an HP account, internet connection and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer. Choose HP+ at printer setup to activate benefits:"

What I did find about it is:
You can optionally activate HP+ which is a program including instant ink: a monthly fee to pay for the used ink depending on the number of pages you print. I read something about starting fee of €0.99 (about $1.25) monthly for 15 pages. The printer ALWAYS needs to be connected to the internet in this mode.

As an alternative you can use the printer w/o the subscription -but- these printers ONLY use original (expensive) cartridges.

And of course: you never know what they charge you next month or year for the subscription..

So, you might want to look for a model without an 'e' in the model number because these are the ones with HP+ aboard.

That only applies if you have signed up for the HP+ option. See here:

"

What I'm really looking for is, has anyone using Linux actually setup and used an Hp e-model version printer and what was your experience. Did you have to use the Hp mobile app or were you able to use the HPLIP driver for setup? To me the HPLIP listing is too generic for some printers. It lists series of printer models (for example 2700 series ) which covers a lot of printers in that series. I don't want to buy a printer because the listing says all printers in that series are compatible, I would like to hear some actual experiences. According to response I received from Hp, the e-models are their flagship printers and replacing the standard versions.
