Thanks for the tips and suggestions. I've been using an hp Envy 4500 and I liked it but the scanner stopped working. I'm looking for a similar replacement for under $100 that other linux users have had success with. The HP Developers Portal lists printer series, like the 2700 series, but I would feel more comfortable if I knew that a specific model was compatible with linux and what other users experience has been.

The current version of HPLIP installed in MX is 3.21.4. As long as you select a printer that uses a version older than that (according to the Developers Portal), you can be assured that it will work with MX.

HP is very explicit in their documentation that their HP+ printers must be connected to the internet to set up and remain connected in order to function. That's a show stopper for me if that applies to using their printers with linux. Can anyone shed any light on that requirement?

Requirements for HP+ printers:
Keep the printer connected to the Internet HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates. During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must also still be connected to the Internet.

I am definitely not an expert -but- from the walmart add I read:

"HP+ Smart Printing System – The optional HP+ system enables your printer to think ahead so it’s more secure, more productive and ready when you are. Requires an HP account, internet connection and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer. Choose HP+ at printer setup to activate benefits:"

What I did find about it is:
You can optionally activate HP+ which is a program including instant ink: a monthly fee to pay for the used ink depending on the number of pages you print. I read something about starting fee of €0.99 (about $1.25) monthly for 15 pages. The printer ALWAYS needs to be connected to the internet in this mode.

As an alternative you can use the printer w/o the subscription -but- these printers ONLY use original (expensive) cartridges.

And of course: you never know what they charge you next month or year for the subscription..

So, you might want to look for a model without an 'e' in the model number because these are the ones with HP+ aboard.

What I'm really looking for is, has anyone using Linux actually setup and used an Hp e-model version printer and what was your experience. Did you have to use the Hp mobile app or were you able to use the HPLIP driver for setup? To me the HPLIP listing is too generic for some printers. It lists series of printer models (for example 2700 series ) which covers a lot of printers in that series. I don't want to buy a printer because the listing says all printers in that series are compatible, I would like to hear some actual experiences. According to response I received from Hp, the e-models are their flagship printers and replacing the standard versions.
