you do not *have* to switch from MX linux to have newer software. It IS always possible to work the latest in, just not through the more stable repos. ( you should be asking the question DO you want to leave the more stable debian / MX Linux repos ( in my opinion!)

As for thunderbird, there are many security provisions and by *properly* using it it is safe. Far safer then most email clients ( again - in my opinion!)

As manyroads mentioned, you can install thunderbird 91, it just has to be downloaded and added to the system. Once it is installed, then it needs to be maintained outside of the mx repos.

Again, read the release notes and see if you believe it is warranted to move up from version 78.

Unless you want to pick up the pieces of a broken system, use the latest stable version for the distribution you are using. Otherwise, plan on a trail of endless grief.

Buck Fankers wrote: Tue Oct 19, 2021 12:55 pm About security. I don't use Thunderbird, since there is safer email version, Claws. It is in MXPI. Why is more secure? Since it does not allow HTML and other script like stuff executing in email body. Means, you only have ugly simple text. No icons, smileys, jumping pepperonis etc...
Thunderbird 68.12.0 can do that and more - it allows an email to not only be displayed as Plain Text but also Original HTML and Simple HTML by going to View > Message Body As > then select one of the three options as shown in the below image:

Installing from the test repo did upgrade to 78. I will have to wait for 91 to trickle down.

You can block all of those scary things mentioned by Buck in Thunderbird and still have all the other features. Security and features.

So the answer to my original question is still "you can't, you have to wait, unless you want to install it manually and do manual updates.".

That’s not exactly true, it was already stated that you can manually install 91 in several posts.

But if you want it in the repos, yeah you’re gonna have to wait for it to be possibly packaged, tested, then uploaded. Please, Remember unpaid volunteers do all this for you in their spare time.

FWIW: 91 is in Debian Experimental only. Same goes for the Buntu families.
