I have looked but has anyone installed the deepin desktop?
Is it possible or utterly stupid?

If stupid... Why?

Deepin desktop is not available for MX or for Debian. A few Deepin apps are available in the MX Package Installer Stable Repo tab, if you would like to try them. The music player is quite nice (see pics), and the screenshot tool and image viewer (see pic) work well. The movie player would not install for me - complained about a missing library dependency. You should try some of the apps, see what you think.

If there's no Deepin respin listed in the list of respins that others have done, then there isn't one. If OP can figure out how to install Deepin's desktop environment and make it work in MX he/she could be the first.

Looked nice... but perhaps its a bit of work to get it on debian... and of course the video makes for a lot of thought.

Deepin is based on Debian stable actually. But I think there is a lot of work to get it to work on MX since it uses a special forked windowsmanager to get the nice look. There is an independent respin of ubuntu released by enthusiasts just a couple weeks ago: UbuntuDDE where they have done some nice work.
I used to run Deepin for a while, very beautiful DE. I miss it and thought for a while that I change to UbuntuDDE now that it is out, but I like the whole MX-Linux concept more :) But if someone would make Deepin DE work on MX, I am all game!

The reddit post is from Jan 2020. Doesn't seem that the latest version of Deepin DE is using pure Debian Stable, since there are Sid/Testing elements. Which is a big no no for Debian Stable-based distros.

You may wish also to do a forum search of the package requests sub-board. Someone has already asked for Deepin but kept insisting they want the latest version (still in Beta and may not be backport-able) and not a considerably older version that can run on Debian Buster.

Be careful what you ask for. I have tested Deepin 20 Beta in a Arch-based repo, and it is a different creature from previous versions. Interface is different, no more theming with third party themes is allowed (meaning you are left with using Deepin's own theme (singular). You can choose between Light, Dark or Auto!), and the right sided slide out panel is gone.

Worse, currently there seems to be no way to opt out of the User Experience thingy, ie where you agree to allow your system to send a whole lot of anonymised info to Deepin devs. There is a switch to turn off your agreement to this but after you turn it off, close the settings manager and then open it again, you will find that the switch has turned itself on again.

Maybe these will be changed or improved in the Final version. But who knows at this point?

I really think that right now there's no point packaging the latest Deepin for MX (Debian Buster). Reassess again when the final release is out.
