Easier to use than yet another program, open a terminal:

Code: Select all

killall -9 processname

Or.. ctrl alt esc

Your mousepointer will change to a skull. Click what you want ended.

I used gparted in Mint to increase the size of my MX16 root partition to so something more sensible and got vlc to behave better (so far) by removing the "--started-from-file' part in the startup launcher. I also added a new 20G swap partition.

I'm still unsure about the proper way to install a kernel.

I just wanted to suggest you read the section of the MX manual that deals with kernel upgrades.
MX has a fine manual that explains things very well.

It is not nice to roll your eyes at someone giving you solid advice. Kernels are a complex matter.

Here is the message I get when trying to install a new kernel from the package manager:
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
Warning: Unable to find an initial ram disk that I know how to handle.
Will not try to make an initrd.
And a bunch of other ominous sounding stuff which I could post if it would help.

Maybe I should start a new thread with this?

Sorry about the eye roll there - it was meant for myself like a 'duh' or face palm - not duane, who I know is trying to help me out here.
