Systemd kernel as it has caused fewer headaches on my hardware.
Is there such a thing?

I use the "Default". So far I haven't experimented with different kernels. I guess so far my hardware has not needed a different kernel than the default. I use mostly Core2Duo class machines in MX, and one Pentium-4 and one i5 Quad.

I used to build patched kernels for my T100CHI since 4.3.5, but now any kernel >= 4.16 works well enough for my Intel baytrail that I don't have to anymore. Now I'm using the liquorix kernel.
