From terminal it works.

Most distros (I have used) leave the compose unset because tiling window managers make heavy use of keybindings and... lwin for example is the Super key used as the primary activator for crucial actions. (See you picked an important key! ) I personally use R-alt because it is rarely used for other purposes (so say I... & don't believe me).

As a long time xfce guy trying to learn tiling windows (bspwm). And full disclosure time. I have had to change a lot of key board constructs to make things work both on my pcs and in my head. Anyway that's all just a long song of woe to say, it is hard to find the right key for 'most' people. Setting the key is really quite easy and we'll 'probably get less grumbling here if we let users pick their own.

Yeah.. it is why I chose that key. I use it for nothing, and it was such a sad little key... sitting there all shiny while the rest got worn

So I would have to do this every time I log in. Ehh.. nope. It's nice, but I'd rather do it my way and have things set up from the getgo without fiddling

Come to think of it, it MIGHT be possible to put this in session and startup though, that would do the same thing, but.. to each their own solution.

For people who like to type lots of esoteric things they can also enter the ascii character code each time. "10" characters typed and one character appears. Well the wrong one would appear for me. :lipsrsealed: As you will note from the following helpful Windows Office Guide there's nothing to it.

Character map.. I remember back when in Mepis which was running on KDE I had kcharmap installed and hanging in the top of the screen. Now that was nice :) Just point and click what you wanted.

I think things like that are still around. My problem is I use diacritical marks in German, French and Polish. I am so lucky (ich bin so glücklich, je suis très chanceux, Jestem taki szczęśliwy).

I tried to find that actually back when.. no luck then.

When I found this modkeymajiggie I was very happy about it and stuck with it.

by the way here is a tip. At keyboard layout, if you choose (using the gui of course) the option of English (international AltGr dead keys) and not the default option, then you will have additional characters if you press AltGr (this is the right alt key).

Yes that would be uncomfortable, but you can put it in a start script (~/.profile? ~/.xinitrc? I don't know which one is loaded at session login).
Personally I like keep this kind of custom settings in a user file, so that I know it's not default, and if I must reinstall I just copy the settings file.
