I do get folder previews but I do have KDE Standard installed, although I do not use KDE. Perhaps there is a support library or app required.

I tried MX package Installer> Popular Apps>Desktop Environment and install KDE Standard and tried from Mx stable repo. Not working previews. Maybe it because I running on Virtual Machine? Or maybe I must install different Dolphin? I installed Dolphin 16.12.3

Dolphin itself can be installed on the MX Test Repo tab of the Package Installer--or maybe you know that already.

I doubt it is because of the virtual machine. I am using the same Dolphin version. Just for verification, since you installed KDE Standard and it may have overwritten the original configuration, try going through the same steps with the Control config you did before.

So what exactly I must to do?
1) install kde standart which one and from which repo?
2) install dolphin from MX repo test?
3) install kio-extras from MX or from Synaptic sudo apt-get install ffmpegthumbs mplayerthumbs ffmpegthumbnailer kio-extras ?

There is Dolphin in Flatpack repo but it has large mb.

The kuiserver daemon is required for KDE applications to be able to show progress dialogs. Install....
sudo apt-get install kde-runtime

Dolphin does not show thumbnails:
sudo apt-get install ffmpegthumbs mplayerthumbs ffmpegthumbnailer kio-extras

Installed kde-runtime ffmpegthumbs mplayerthumbs ffmpegthumbnailer kio-extras (mplayerthumbs not istalling) and it not works

MX Linux' default file manager is Thunar not Dolphin. So not many are using Dolphin. Also it pays to be patient and you may get more suggestions as time goes on.

I am using Gnome, had a similar problem. This how it was solved.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install exo-utils
sudo apt-get install xfce4-settings

Run: xfce4-settings-manager
<Preferred Applications><Utilities><File Manager>
Before installing, try:
Run: xfce4-settings-manager
<Preferred Applications><Utilities><File Manager>

EDIT
Doesn't work with "Save As"... it opens Thunar. Works when downloading.... click stratus bar in Chromium.

I did some Googling and one must distinguish between a file manager and file picker. Apps seem to define their own file picker and GTK apps may use a different appearance for a file picker than QT apps. So I do not think this is easily changed. Anyway ugly is in the eye of the beholder. As long as the simple function of picking a file is met what it looks like is pretty immaterial in my opinion.

richb, you are right. I temporarily removed Thunar, the file picker is still there. File manager and File picker are different apps.

Dolphin is only one file manager who can make folders previews?

Though others handed you the answer, you could have found those in Synaptic by searching in the Quick Search for
"kde thumbnail". There are a few that you haven't installed, and you must still enable those previews in Dolphin's settings. You might also want to apply some more tips and tricks: https://www.ghacks.net/2018/03/01/tips- ... e-manager/

Nautilus has an unofficial extension that allows for thumbnails on folder icons. I don't find anything for other filemanagers, even polo-gtk.

I don't think MX has the largest installed base in the Linux world by far. We still have a long ways to go to catch up to more established distros. We just are getting the most click-throughs at Distrowatch.

Plus: we do not offer an official KDE version. As we make clear in various locations, support for other DEs or WMs a user installs only comes from individuals.

I installed kde plasma and kde standart also I installed some kde thumbnail you coud see in first post. I did alot think. I don`t understand why use Thunar in MX it is not good file manager. There is good manager Nemo, it is much better when Thunar. But only Dolphin can do folder previews. It`s sad.

Thumbnails for folder contents are just not enough of a killer feature to justify using a non-XFCE file manager, speaking as one of the developers. I do use Dolphin on XFCE myself, though, and have packaged the KDE epub thumbnailer for MX that no other Debian-based distro had at the time.

Adrian, another MX developer, does have KDE respins of MX that work quite well.

For video thumbnails you need the package ffmpegthumbs installed. Then enable it in the Preview section of "Configure Dolphin" and switch Previews on in the Menu bar.

It`s all installed read post above man said that MXlinux have old KDE so that is why video folder preview not working. It all about FOLDER (with video files in there) preview not about video previews in folder.

I think problem is with ffmpegthumbs or kio-extras. On Mint it is works well. I mean it is shows cover thumbnail on video folder. Because ffmpegthumbs was installed from Ubuntu repository. I don`t know how to install Ubuntu ffmpegthumbs here on MXLinux.
And it works (shows cover thumbnail on video folder) on Manjaro because ffmpegthumbs has latest veruson from Arch repository.

I just install MX linux 19.1.

There's no option to selection Dolphin under MX test Repo tab.

So I installed install KDE Standard.

How do I set dolphin to default file manager? When I click a folder on desktop, it still open up old thunar.

Run the following command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

exo-preferred-applications -c
In Preferred Applications dialog that opens: Utilities tab --> File Manager Change:
"dolphin "%s"

The previous conversations were about MX 18 and its Stretch version of KDE, though we have a newer dolphin in the test repo for 17/18.

With MX 19 and its jump to Debian Buster, none of that need apply. We may or may not be able to add a newer dolphin to MX 19's test repo in the future.

You would need to install the system settings for KDE and dependent applications. You could then set the dolphin theme and colors. However it is a bit tricky as you could end up with odd results. You have to remember that dolphin is not an XFCE application but a KDE one.

I never managed to get Dolphin to work properly in Xfce, but I wasn't prepared to install the whole of KDE to make it so. I tried in MX but couldn't get it to display with dark theme. Theoretically it should be configurable with KDE System Settings as suggested.
When used in a dedicated KDE desktop, it is hands down the best graphical file manager for Linux.

I have been using Dolphin for some time in MX. But I do install KDE full. The same advice applies regarding KDE system Settings as before mentioned. In theory you only need system settings But it alone does not fully populate without other libraries and apps. Rather than try to figure that out, I just do a full install.

I've had Dolphin following the XFCE dark theme for years, but I think it's also necessary to use KDE's systemsettings5 to choose a KDE color layout for a dark theme, since you'll probably end up with dark on dark invisible text otherwise.

Re: How install Dolphin on XFCE

If Xfce is still your main desktop, I would suggest kde-full is not necessary and kde-standard is total overkill. I have a Buster netinstall system which only has kde-plasma-desktop and it has full function in System Settings. Buster installs recommends by default afaik and systemsettings is a recommend of kde-plasma-desktop so in MX it would be preferable to do

Code: Select all

apt install --install-recommends kde-plasma-desktop
. Not sure if you can do that in MXPI; Synaptic can if set in Preferences.
Of course you could just install the systemsettings package by itself but it would pull in most of kde-plasma-desktop as dependencies anyway.
