Yeah, it's a bit of an ugly duckling alright. To get the left side to show, it's necessary to drag the vertical divider to the right, which has to be done each and every time. The GUI def needs a fix-up

Ah ok, if "(home)/.local/share/fonts" is the latest place to use them, then I'll put them there, thanks :)

Thanks, I doubt that UI can be fixed though. ;)
I didn't see an install button. I think it's more of a font manager than a font installer. When someone asks "What's wrong with Gnome 3?", I think I'll show this app. Those Client Side Decorations ain't pretty. ;)

for many fonts (Should I say hundreds?) freely available from Google there is application called TypeCatcher.
TypeCatcher manages .woff (webfonts) only, right? Which applications other than web browsers can display those?
