The updates are no problem really.
If the program doesn't run in the background it doesn't use resources other than harddisk space that at around 3GB installed space is really small compared to the hardrive sizes nowadays.

I see. I still have a windows perspective when looking at all the processes running in the background, consuming resources. LInux seems to have fewer and be more efficient.

He is using a USB not a hard drive, so if it is loading the OS into RAM that reduces the available free RAM, which can reduce speed.

Hmmmm. I could try to remove it and see if there is a difference. I was thinking along the lines of the first poster though.
He didn't post back there was a big difference in speed. Thanks for the input.
