New Antix forum looks great. Will try the new Antix 17 in a few days when I figure out which box I want to put it on.

If I downloaded rc1, and am fully updated with synaptic, am I the same as the release version?
Meaning, were there any changes after rc1?
If none, I am already running it.
Working well so far.

Yes there are changes, but mostly on the live-USB side of things.

Great video, D_O!
I have to say the new features in antiX look good. There really is so much innovation in antiX.
You might think at first that it's just a distro for old/weaker hardware with "old school" WM, but then you see their tools for scaling up for hidpi displays, including the antiX-conky, the new CLI tools, .... the list goes on.

Nice new forum and home, fast distro, managed to put it at minimum systemd.
One thing, if you can make Menu > Search bar will be excellent.

You could try adding the XFCE Search function [EDIT: oops, it's called the XFCE Application Finder]. I did it previously in trial installs of antiX but those were running on additionally-installed MATE or XFCE. And for MATE I had to edit the .desktop file to remove the setting that makes it show up only in XFCE. I can't recall if it showed up in the menus for fluxbox or icewm.

Personally I've added an utility called "kupfer" that is kind of like the whisker menu search. It has a lot more options, but that's what I use it for. It shows up in my "what's new" video. ctrl+space brings it up.

There is also synapse, if you want something similar to kupfer.

Not sure if it's anything to worry about, but I was trying to download today - 64full downloaded quickly enough, but 64base seems to be extremely slow, on several mirrors. (Just for info, mainly.)

I agree, very nice video. I'm glad you stressed that antiX should be the go-to distro for live USB and CLI. I see from time to time questions on reddit or other forums: "which distro should I use to run from a USB and be able to preserve my changes and be able to backup everything" or similar things that antiX had it covered for years -- I wish more people would be like "duh, just antiX or MX" Maybe we need to make sure when we release MX to make a special note of Live tools.

Do we need to do anything to make sure the mirrors get populated with the new files, e.g. Crete, Ecudor?
I edited the first post since the full announcement is now up.

Is the root and user password combo still reversed as previously when asked for root access (eg. Synaptic, su in terminal ?)
I have previously set user password as if it were my root version, for convenience when working between other MX partitions.....
Congratulations to those working hard on our behalf! Thank you.

Since antiX-15 version, we changed to using sudo (although you can change to 'real' root in the control centre) because of 'complaints' about the passwords not being saved which meant that you got the pop-up every time even within a session for the same app. So, when you are prompted by the pop-up for a password you will user your username password. (The message that pops up actually says to provide your username password and not the admin one)

hello anticapitalista
Have here a live antix17 running for three days. just waitin for a time when the installation can be enjoyed.
.>This comment directed to asqwerth from before the kupfer comment
.>About installing xfce application finder; do also install package exo-utils for editing application finder menu.
and at asinoro, asqwerth seemed to understand that you wanted a menu search. Otherwise in antix you made me think of menu>Applications>Internet>Search Bar when you mention Search Bar.. ((bar: just an aside: in google translate entering the word bar does not return definition of saloon nor the law bar examination for attorneys. just sharing a funny observation.))

@ l_ri May be you did not search sufficiently in Google, I found: the whole body of barristers or lawyers qualified to practice in the courts of any jurisdiction
dreams of being admitted to the bar (3) :the profession of barrister or lawyer

Should any of you living north of the equator look south and see a column of smoke, not to worry it is not the end of the earth, just me going into orbit.
Following my usual habit, I delayed a download of the new antiX for a couple of days in case there were any undiscovered bugs. I then tried to get the program. Firstly from Source Forge. Three, no four attempts to download, all stalled with a couple of seconds to finish, then timed out. Nearly an hour wasted. Next step was to try the mirrors. Antix has not appeared on our local NZ mirror. so on past experience I went to Taiwan, it is usually quite fast. Not so today, my browser estimated 4 hours, but 20 minutes later, this had increased to four and a half hours, so abandoned it and changed to LA. Success, downloaded in less than 5 minutes, I rejoiced.
Next step was to burn the iso onto a optical disk. No joy. The DVD drive that has behaved for years, refused to open and let me load a disk. Power off and a look at the drive's interior. A mechanical failure, not easily repaired. What next ? Found an external DVD drive and plugged it in to USB. Using K3b, made an iso DVD. Then, with some guidance from the Manual (thanks Jerry) found that function key F8 would allow a boot from USB. Did this and fairly quickly installed antiX on to sdb, a 320 Gb drive in the desk top. Had a pleasurable half hour looking at antiX and updated Grub to include the new system.
All good? Not at all. Installation was smooth, Grub update OK, but now on a new boot up, Grub cannot see antiX . With GParted, I checked the partitions and their labels. They appeared to be OK but an attempt to update one of the labels failed. GParted reported that the antiX installation was Read Only. The log said " e2label: Filesystem has unsupported read-only feature(s) while trying to open /dev/sdb8. Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock." An old MX14 system on this HD opens and runs well, antiX does not.
This is when I abandoned antiX for the evening. Any suggestions?

My ISP has sucked since forever and ever.
is my best buddy when downloading a iso. Always has been. Always will be. I can't speak for windows users though and browser addons.
KISS is how I roll. I'd start over if I was you Gordon.
Edit: Why may you think? Because a lot variables in your post and with a good do over. With a md5sum checked iso. Which I also do.
Solves a ton of issues for me as a tester for the team.

All fixed now but cause of problem not defined. Re-installed AntIx but still no sign of it in Grub. Used the Boot-repair tool to Rebuild the Grub list and Antix is now
there and boots up without any problem. Will use it for a day or two before looking for the original fault.

I did add uGet for this particular one, being on middling wifi and a large direct download that dropped out on initial FF attempts.

Instructions about how to add icons-Launcher of programs on your desktop and panel in antiX are explained on the antiX Faq: https: //download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-15/FAQ/index.html
You must see the ROX section.
The link I mentioned to you is obviously in English, but I'm translating FAQ into Italian, so I can attach a file with the translated pages, even if they are not in the final version yet, I want to make checks in case of mistakes before to publish them. However, as you need it immediately, I attach the file for you of my provisional version.
Now I'm hurry but this evening I attach it to you.
Le indicazioni di come aggiungere icone-Launcher di programmi sul desktop, e sulla barra in basso, in antiX sono spiegate sulle antiX Faq:
https://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/do ... index.html
Ciao

It is more convenient to open a new tread on the Italian forum. I attach the FAQ file, translated into italian, there.
E' più comodo aprire un nuovo tread nel forum italiano. Attacco il file delle faq li. ciao

Hi Everyone!
I am just wondering if I am using AntiX 17.0 on a really old computer and it was installed a while ago and I haven't used it since, is it possible to upgrade this system to AntiX 17.1 without a need of a fresh install or I have to fresh install AntiX 17.1 from its ISO? Thanks for your help and replies.

yes, although the system won't report itself as 17.1. (this is a design decision so that we know what iso the user starts from) 17.1 is built from the same repos as 17.
