I am new to Linux staff and made a dual boot on my computer (with win 10). Now I can't get into the Windows as I just forgot the password. How can i use MX to remove or reset the password? is that possible?

Follow this link for instructions on how to reset your password using Win 10.
https://www.howtogeek.com/222262/how-to ... indows-10/

However, if it was me, I'd take it as a sign from above and use a linux disk to lift my data from the win 10 partition and paste it in the linux partition. Then format the Win 10 partition (s) as ext4 for future use as storage.

My wife has a Win 7 machine. I managed to avoid the "free" upgrade to 10.

With all the privacy invasion of 10, I would never touch that steaming pile.
When 7 reaches EOL in 2020, I ( really my wife) will have to decide what to do with her machine.

I recommend converting to Linux, but she is not (yet) convinced.

No Microsoft products being used in any system I am running. There is a dual boot MX-16 32 bit machine with winXP for clients gaming collection yet to be picked up, but not really what you asked.

I had a Win7 laptop but I installed a few Linux distros and never touched the Windows partition.

No Win10.

Never used win 10. I have win 7 in a VM in MX-16, used only to update gadgets requiring a Windows OS to update software.

Win 10 on the wife's machine. The kids spend more time on Apple / Android devices but use her PC on occasion. My employer is Win only for end users, but we're still on Win 7.

Refusing 10 myself, for now. I only looked at 8, w less than 3 hours of use. (I used various tips, and then Spybot's Anti-Beacon to stop the notices and telemetries.) I've had an unrealistic wish that open source would kick butt with new tech.
To be honest, If I had a This Gen CPU, I'd have 10 installed, and locked-down to the best of my ability, and would TRY to use it as little as possible.

The only reason I still use windows is for Gaming. If you don't game you will never need windows or you could use Wine but not for me..
I still find Windows 8.1 the best i make the iso with nLite with all security updates and SP3 but no other updates if you dont want Telemetry to deal with and (windows updates Turned off and never on)
You can download all windows updates from 7 up to 10 and some office versions with windows update mini tool or wsusoffline109
Windows 10 works find but it is very contolling, you have no say in the matter as far as updates go....as will as the spyware to deal with..

You use Linux :number1:

My wife's laptop has Win 8.1, and my main AMD desktop has Win 7. But those are kept because of proprietary programs that have to have windoze. And with no Linux version available, you are stuck. But my laptop has Antix-16 and MX-16 as dual-boot as so does my main AMD desktop.

From what I had read about the plans of Microsoft with 10 and Office, I refused to be blackmailed to use an O.S.

I guess I spend over 95% of my time with with MX-16. It does almost everything I need without costing me the same as my internet service.

There are some tricks to it, like if you are running MX 64 bit, you may need to setup wine to run 32 bit.

It came on the laptop, but I shrunk the partition, added partitions for /MX /home & swap and now run MX almost exclusively since taking it out of the box it came in. Keep Win10 up to date for family technical support info.

My wife's business desktop mobo died last week. It's been replaced with an i7 Dell from Costco. I stripped the win10 that came on it and loaded MX 16 straight up. I've also got a win7 virtual machine on it as well so she can still run her MS stuff. She has an ipod that needs itunes but I haven't been able to get that to go on wine yet. Another reason for the VM.

I went about 4 years without using Windows, and I do not trust MS even though they have tried to act more friendly to Linux. Having said that, I bought a T420 Thinkpad this summer that has Windows 10 pro on it. Despite wanting to hate it the OS is nicer than Win7, feels more polished. Privacy is probably about the same as a Chromebook if everything possible is shut off. Yet who really knows what MS is collecting? Since it is pro edition I can delay updates for 6 mos. But Debian 9 runs like a champ on it. I've become a big fan of Thinkpads. Wonderful to have brightness and volume keys and suspend work OOTB. Also recently picked up a X201 Thinkpad, nice little machine but Win7 is heavy on it. Moving it to Linux soon.

None that I have kept. Started switching to Linux when they were developing Vista. I used to boot into Windows once a year to do my taxes. Now I let AARP do my taxes. I don't need Widows for anything. It was just too frustrating to install drivers and fuss with virus removal. So glad I switched. When I get a used machine I wipe Windows off immediately.

Gates hasnt built anything decent since XP - with all their HIB emoji-engineers having stirred
the W10 cauldron , its an unmitigated disaster - use W7 occasionally - a steroid version of XP
on a remote mosheen to root iPhones, etc - do not touch giggle, fakebook, or icloud anything

since win-10 gets an face-lift every six months, or so,
then at that point, there seems to be another crowd of folks, who are dissatisfied, by that recent update.
& then they do start looking for an alternative - - Hello Linux

I will be installing win10 on my new system, next to mx18. I need windows to update the tomtom and the mio cyclo, and playing games in steam.

And nope. VB doesn't do as good a job, because it continuously spits out the connected device. Not something you'd want when updating maps.

I have win7 right now, but considering that one will have no more support soon, I've bitten the bullet and purchased the 10 thing already.

I use it for games and recording from Digico UB MADI 48 channel audio interface which doesn't have a Linux driver. Works OK but I've stripped out as much telemetry and annoying unwanted programs as I could.
Highly recommend Win10Privacy which is a magic program to whip Win10 into shape - https://www.winprivacy.de/english-home/

Windows hooks itself into the hardware with the license number. Change the hardware and byebye Windows.

I have win10 here now and asked the seller if I could install it on this system and then later on on the new one, only using one computer, never using the old system one again. Nope they said.. number is hardware bound so it gets locked if you want to do that.

Annoying!

IIRC you can change hardware if you own a retail version but probably have to contact MS support. If it comes pre-installed on a computer, it dies with that computer although you may be in luck if you ask nicely after a mobo change.

For What It Might Be Worth: My recent experience counters this.

I have Win10 installed on a drive. As seen in this thread, I have replaced my MBO, memory, and processor. Took the Win10 drive, inserted it into the "new machine" and it booted just fine, no issues, nothing to indicate that it was no longer "authentic". I've rebooted it a number of times and now issue.

The same applies to a Server 2012 install on another drive. There were updates for this install. I applied the updates and rebooted. Still no issues.

Does the above mean that I won't have problems in the future? I don't know; my crystal ball is a bit foggy - I bought the cheaper one on the shelf.

I just got myself x220 i5 an it had windows 10 pro installed on a intel 180gb sdd and 4gb ram.
Ran mod 1.46 bios on the old 180gb win10
upgraded with 250gb 840 evo , 500gb msata 860 evo , 8gb gskill 1866 ram
Installed windows 10 pro iso from microsoft connected to the internet , activated , updated , partition the drive for linux installed antiX. (Still one free) no issues at all.
Really enjoy using this great little machine. My t430 is now my media machine in the docking station.

The only reason I have Win10 is to update my Garmin and one other thing I do for the DW (that's Dear Wife) that I've done once a while back and can not, now, remember what it was.

The Server (it's actually 2016, not 2012) is because I'm working on my Server 2016 MCSA and I downloaded the ISO from MS to build a lab environment the work through issues I don't understand - there's a lot of those!

So, 99+% of my time at home (time at work doesn't count - I have no control over that) is spent in MX.

I've just bought a new ThinkPad E485 (Ryzen ftw!) and it has Win10 preinstalled, Lenovo didn't give me the option not to.

I was going to keep it because I've already paid for it and I'm using this machine for games but I've run the benchmark map for CS:GO[1], Windows averaged 56 frames per second but Debian buster managed 70 FPS

Using the operating system for even a brief period frustrates me massively and the EULA is scary — you basically have to agree that Microsoft has access to any data and any input on the machine

So I think I will wipe it soon...

That was the only thing I missed having windows for, so when I wiped it from the hard drive, I was having to use a friends laptop to update the Garmin. Then I downloaded "Here" maps to my mobile / cell phone, and never looked back. The phone is about the same size as the Garmin screen, the maps are better and download much quicker, ( at least for the UK ), the navigation voice clearer, and the phone display is sharper and better overall, so a good solution for me, and no further need for reliance on Windows..

Bought a couple of Thinkpad x230s off ebay for $90/each. Needed some cleaning , replaced keyboard on one ( $35) and put in a beautiful IPS screen($70) on the one without IPS .
They came with win 10 pro installed.
Before doing anything else - I ran a windows update - with all the usual multiple failed updates etc etc - but it seemed to ultimately update itself to March 2018 level. And man was the GUI uggggllly!!
Then I disabled all updates, ran a script ( debloater) to get rid of all the bloatware ( there is plenty), installed classicshell ( so the start-menu looks like in win 7).
Then I ran O&O shutup - that further disables a bunch of telemetry and other crap.
Then I installed a few of the windows apps I have used for 20 years.
Then I put the thing in airplane mode - so it does'nt connect to the internet automatically.
I plan to leave win 10 in that state. To use in the rare ocassion I need windows for something ( most recently TurboTax).
It is a debloated, crippled windows 10 - Just the way I like it. It is strapped to a chair with its hands tied behind its back!!

Then I installed MX, as a dual boot. This is what I use 99% of the time.

I do use Windows 10 at times. I have some writing software licenses for Windows. But it is slow, even with plenty of ram and an SSD it crawls compared to MX. I went for about 5 years Windows free, easy to do as Windows 8 was truly horrible. Windows 7 never interested me much. I moved to Linux during XP, which had some good points, but was a virus magnet. Linux gives you much more control of your hardware.

I stopped using Windows when I bought a laptop with Win 7 pre-installed. Within five minutes (literally) Windows was history and Linux had replaced it (Mint back then!)

I know this doesn't help you with the password problem but I thought I would answer the question in the title. Lol.

I haven't really used Windows in at least 10 years. Except for the occasional fixing of things on my Wife's computer that is.

Fortunately, I have a job that allows me to run Linux on my desktop and my job is managing Linux servers. Desktop has been MX for about 1 year now and most of the servers I manage are Centos. I prefer Debian myself but everyone wants to either use Centos/RHEL or Ubuntu ( UGH ).

I do use Windows 10 as my main computer. Main reasons due to familiarity and there are some programs (Garmin GPS updates, Turbotax Desktop version) which aren't in Linux. I do avoid using the tiles in Windows 10 start menu via a third party program that suppresses they tiles. Otherwise, they would drive me bonkers.

I use Linux on my laptops and there are certain programs work better than a Windows versioned program. One that comes to mind is SimpleScreenRecorder. I use that sometimes record livestreams and my Windows user friends think I have a magic touch of sort ;) .

As the saying goes. Whether Windows or Linux or some of both, "The right tool for the job".

I am tempted to buy Windows Server 2019 Essentials just to avoid the mandatory update fiasco, but I must confirm with Microsoft that updates aren't pushed as aggressively as Windows 10. I really don't need Windows for much these days other than fiddling with devices that rely on software that needs Windows.

i think a lot of apps will start putting out linux-installable versions - I would suggest appimages. They dont have to be free. Adobe for instance.
It feels almost like MS has lost interest in Windows for the "folks". Its more interested in Corporate, Cloud business.
And the product - Win 10 - is shockingly bad. I am actually amazed anyone would voluntarily actually pay money for it.
As consumers move away from Windows, and MS focuses on Cloud services - these pricey app makers like Adobe - will have to make a decision.

Windows advocates who confidently point to the large market share etc - are whistling in the dark. The legs are being sawed off, and a 50% market share can go to 5% in a very short period .

Around a year or so ago I bought an Asus Zenbook sub-notebook from my sister-in-law when she needed the money. It had a Core i7 dual-core, dual-threaded CPU, 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM, 1TB HDD. etc. and Windows 10 Home along with Asus' bloatware. Man, was it slow! I ran Win10 long enough to look at it then used Clonezilla to make an image of it for posterity and installed Linux. Ah! Much better! Nice and fast.

I ran Linux-only, no dual-boot, in UEFI mode for about 9 months then I needed the money, so I put Win10 back on it and sold it for what I paid for it. I was tempted to leave Linux on it but in the Philippines everyone wants Windows for some reason (except the buyer, who planned to install OSX.) So to answer the OP's question, we've been Windows-free here since about 2012 or 2013. Linux all the way.

Given the number of times "the year of the Linux desktop" has been predicted (whenever a version of Windows is about to go end-of-life) I think this is unfortunately a pipe dream. Consumers couldn't care less about operating systems, they just want a computer for the internet, the facebook, the google, the email, the Word, the Excel, and the Outlook. It doesn't matter how bad the Windows shenanigans will be, consumers don't care that much. I know people that still want Windows 10 despite all the bad stuff they know about it, because it's Windows and they use it at work so are used to it.

Either that, or they can see that the legs are being sanded off rather than sawed off. The only things that will reduce the Windows market share to the level you're suggesting at this stage, will be either regulatory interference from the US government, or Microsoft themselves pulling the plug. Guess how likely either one of those things is to happen.

If M$ ever decides to go to a subscription model for their Windows licensing, where you don't own your own OS, you merely rent it, that may drive a percentage of users away, toward either Linux, BSD or OSX. Most of the rest will either find a way to use pirated license keys or just pony up the cash every month or year. A few might even stop using their computers and go outside, read books, and go to movies, plays and concerts I suppose, like we used to do decades ago before there were home computers and the Internet.

The subject makes me squirm.

I have custody of the homeowner's association laptop that has Windows 10 for running QuickBooks. Windows 10 is the worst OS experience ever. On a super fast laptop it's like slogging through molasses. Arghhhh. On the same computer, MX boots in 10 seconds from a USB 2.0 flash drive and totally flies.

I have Vista on an old laptop and I only keep it to update my Garmin GPS.

I have XP in a VirtualBox VM to use QuickBooks to occasionally review a school's books. That works fine. The school also uses XP in a VM to run QuickBooks on one computer. I converted the school from Windows XP to Linux 13 years ago.

Otherwise, I'm MS free. For personal use, I only use Linux. I haven't had a Windows partition of any kind for at least 10 years.

I am not using windows 10 at all, only Linux here but Microsoft sent me a message this morning about a windows 10 upgrade via google on my android phone. I kinda thought that was insulting. But I do have an old windows 7 install on an old computer just don't use it. Hmm.

If it has a link in the message it could be a scam. Microsoft doesn't cold-call people, and I've never received any messages like that.

Thats probably what GM was saying in 1975. Those Japanese cars are toy-autos ( hahaha). As they went about adding tail-fins and stuff to crappy cars. This stuff takes a while. But the decline will be inexorable.

Run by MBAs and Finance types, the US auto industry in the 1970s - was fat-dumb-and happy. Focus on the furniture you want for your corner office, golf at 3 pm, life is good. Get the MBAs to figure out what doodad consumers want the most - chrome plated ashtrays?
Until - it imploded.

Linus Torvalds Owners sold github to micro$oft 7.5 billion dollars would be nice to see them invest some of the biillons into Linux. Linus Torvalds worth appox $150 million with 10 million annual salary. micro$oft and google (the Linux kernel is an extremely important part of Android devices) both now sit on the Linux board and Arch linux will be in a part of the windows install. Look like they are closing in on Linux.. and all this money for something that is Free

I wonder how much Debian and Arch are worth.

Linus Torvalds sold github
What?! Linus had no part of github, Linus is the developer of git application, Github is just a web service around the application, the only connection between Linus and Github is that Linus is a user of Github (and not a very happy one)`https://www.wired.com/2012/05/torvalds-github/

Sorry that was a mistake by me. Linus Torvalds setup part of github for linux developers to up load and share Linux software and ideas. Not owned by him..

Microsoft already invest significant amounts of money into Linux, that's why they are listed as a Platinum member of the Linux Foundation, and they have been investing for several years now.

The Arch system in the App Store is in violation of the Arch copyright and will likely be removed soon.

Arch Linux on Windows allows one to use Arch Linux Terminal and run Arch Linux command line utilities including bash, ssh, git, pacman and many more. Note that Windows 10 S does not support running this app. (This is not an official application of Microsoft or Arch Linux.)

You have thought microsoft would have remove the app straight away.. According to he's or her github page Scott Xu Kunming Yunnan, China
