@dolphin_oracle

On a machine where the hibernate button did not appear, that xfconf box was checked.

(Getting dragged away now!)

OK no worries.

the quick system infos are perfect.

the NOT2 file has a pretty small swapfile, but otherwise the hibernate is reported as available. for whatever reason though, there is no RESUME variable set in the grub entry. I don't know if its related, but its telling.

both OK ones have resume variables set and ample swap. the system reports hibernate available as well.

The NOT1 system reports hibernate disabled. I don't think it means the switch in Xfce either. It does have a resume variable set, but also has zram swap enabled.

when you are available, and no rush, can you provide for the NOT1 system

Code: Select all

sudo cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
sudo blkid
these will give the UUID information that is filtered out of the QSI.

Installing whichever Beta, do we have to reinstall the final release or will it be upgraded via updates?

@dolphin_oracle has stated that is the intent, but it is the first beta release.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

upgrading from a mx23 to mx25beta1 preserving /home: the "second user" can't login till "chown -R" his home, that after upgrade belongs to "1001".
-- Clipped --
Veryfing the owner of the second user home I find "1001".
I don't see anything out of the ordinary here, just standard first Unix user account UID with Debian based systems. The first is always 1000, the second 1002, the third 1003 and so on.

I would surmise your second user account was not in fact the second account created on the original installation and it may have been assigned a UID higher than 1001, hence your need to change it.

When saving /home on a multi-user system, it is important to identify each users UID as seen in the original installations /etc/passwd file, then make the accounts in the same order so as not to mess them up.

I have successfully performed multi-user upgrades or reinstalls with MX while re-using /home, and I provisioned them in the Live system before running the installer. Not a single one had a problem with UID values because I copied the lines from the original /etc/passwd to a text file and referenced it as i created each user in the Live system to ensure I provisioned each user in the order in which they were originally created.

I do not recommend folk do this live because the installer will lay down a demo account and skip the account creation process, but if you are a seasoned Linux user, this is a trivial thing to work through and our MX User app is capable of renaming the demo account post install, and again, only for seasoned an experienced users.
fehlix reported this. said hardinfo2 installation was creating a user account when we build the isos, with the user being 1001. in effect, the hardinfo2 user "owned" that preexisitng home directory.

I don't like that behavior at all. if that cannot be adjusted, I will remove hardinfo2 from the default installations.

I misread fehlix's report on this. its not a user that's created, its a group with a GID in the user range. in most cases 1001 or 1002. which since a user also has a group, a preserved home folder may not match up, since permissions are on a UID:GID level, not actually user names.

@Adrian @m_pav @fehlix I think we should at minimum remove hardinfo2 from the default isos.. especially since its in debian's repos and not ours.

For those that want it, its easily installable. I'm even willing to put it in the utilities section of popular apps.

OK, seems need to work on my reporting style, to make it more clearer.
I hoped, we could adjust the hardinfo2 package in postinst or similare, to avoid this install artifact, or at least give it a system group below 1000, and not a user group,
which was foreseeable will create lot's of issues.

you'll have to file a bug with XnView. that's why I took it out of mxpi. I'll give you a hint to pass along to them though, that libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 library changed it's name but its still available, its libgdk-pixbuf-2.0-0 now. they XnView will need to change their debian control file.
...
The XnView dev. saids me, "you can force the installation" ... and it is true, by this way that's work. xnview can works.
Edit: But it is not a real solution, because I have to do in this case because the system after is unstable: ( need after a; apt --fix-broken install )
So wait & see.

Code: Select all

root@mx25:/home/tof-mx# dpkg -i --force-overwrite /media/tof-mx/iso004/777P/XnViewMP-linux-x64_V1.9.3.deb

 xnview dépend de libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0); cependant :

... And for hardinfo2, the user group is also a problem for me. (I have uninstalled hardinfo2 and removed the group hardinfo2).

we could, we would have to epoch the version number so that debian updates would never take precedence.

**edit** I did find the problem. it launches a service and the service creates the group. it does not happen via a postinstall script during installs. the group isn't created until first boot, and even then probably only on systemd systems.

Melber wrote: Sat Sep 27, 2025 3:33 pm To stop the resizing and get static scrollbars in gtk3 apps you need to edit various config files. No guarantee this will work consistently for all gtk3 apps.
I tried your suggestion but the result wasn't what I was after, (for example -GtkRange-slider-width didn't seem to have any effect) so I did some research and played around (no idea what I'm doing) and after logging in and out dozens of times....

I added the following line to /etc/environment

Code: Select all

GTK_OVERLAY_SCROLLING=0
I added the following to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini

Code: Select all

[Settings]
gtk-primary-button-warps-slider = false
And I added the following to /.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
It seemed to require not including a dot prior to "scrollbar".
As I said, I've no idea how the code should work, but this gave me the result I was after (so far). See the screenshot below.
There seems to be a bit of a grey border to the left of the vertical scrollbar that probably isn't needed, but I couldn't work out how to remove it.

Code: Select all

scrollbar  {
  -GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: 1;
  -GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: 1;  }

scrollbar.vertical button  {  min-height: 12px;  }
scrollbar.horizontal button  {  min-width: 12px;  }

scrollbar.vertical slider  {
  min-width: 12px;
  min-height: 64px;
  border: 0px;
  border-radius: 0px;  }

scrollbar.horizontal slider  {
  min-width: 64px;
  min-height: 12px;
  border: 0px;
  border-radius: 0px;  }
I also have a windows resizing question...
Is it an oddity because I'm testing in VirtualBox, or has my favourite method of resizing windows... right clicking on a window somewhere while holding the Alt key and dragging the window to change the size.... is that no longer a thing in MX 25?

Cheers.

The new mx-fluxbox (25.09.07mx25) came through today for MX-25 beta1 and I would very much like to get some testing of the new picom compositor setup before end of Thursday Oct 2 so I can update the Wiki help before Final.

:cool2:

To do that, create a new user and log in so you can see and use the setup.

I'm interested in a couple of basic questions:
1) what exactly is its behavior when enabled in statup? What changes do you see in window and other elements?
2) when not enabled in startup, what changes do you see on what elements when you use the new toggle key?
Ctrl Alt 0 << zero
3) when enabled by default then what happens when the new toggle used?
4) what differences do you find between the two inits? [my weak R500 using sysV just froze up]
