Yes Xfce in VirutalBox. I haven't checked this booting ISO directly.

This may already be covered some place, but some installer issues on KDE.

1) I was not prompted to remove the Live USB after install, so it booted right back up into the LiveUSB

2) Even though I said to 'replace the installation' in the install.. it didnt wipe my previous account / data. I did use the same user name, but I used a different password. Upon logging in I found:
a) keychain of previous install was still there AND in affect! So I already had logins to machines in my network (ie it didnt remove them.)
b) Files and Folders from my previous install were still there.
c) My panel was still in the place I left it AND the size I left it in!!

Something off in Icons in KDE ... When I first went to MX Tweak, everything was highlighted *except" for the Icons. I wasnt sure which one I was set too, so I went out to System Settings and Appearances & Sytle, then Icons. Nothing was selected ??? I changed to Oxygen and then back to breeze ( which were the correct icons) and NOT Breeze is displayed both here and in mx tweak ??

'replace the installation' in the install.. it didnt wipe my previous account / data.
I think it's a misunderstanding, that's how it's supposed to work.

So, if I check Replace existing installation ... it KEEPS my existing install?

That is backwards to me.

KEEP my existing install - good
Migrate my existing install - good
Replace my existing install - To me means the install is about to replace what is there.. ie overwrite it.

That is confusing I think.

Re: MX 25 Beta 1 Feedback thread

#87 Post by Stuart_M »

I made a MX-25 Xfce sysVinit installation on a test (blank) SSD with no other disks on the system, using FDE (Full Disk Encryption). I have a question about a message that appears with the passphrase prompt immediately below it. I have never seen this before. I ignored the message and entered the passphrase and was taken to the login window and then the Desktop without any problems. This message appears on every bootup when getting to the FDE passphrase prompt.

Does anyone have any insight on the relevance of this message?

Here is an image taken from my Mobile Phone. The quality is poor so I transcribed the text in the image so it can be easily read, as seen in the below code window.
MX-25_Xfce_sysvinit_FDE_PW_prompt_msg.jpg
The above image states:

EDIT 23 September 2025:
I found the answer to why the above mentioned warning message appears and is posted here for the benefit of future readers.

The answer was provided by https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic. ... 6#p2186153 "Errors during boot, still boots runs okay." (8 June 2022) from the Linux Mint forum which I paraphrase below:
The message is from superfluous errors. ACPI errors are due to BIOS developers not adhering to standards and only the BIOS writers can fix it.

If it really bugs you then edit your /etc/default/grub file and add loglevel=3 to the kernel parameters. In MX-25 that would be Line 9 and would then look like GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash loglevel=3".

Now upgrade GRUB by running sudo update-grub > reboot.
After the above workaround only the prompt to provide the passphrase appears as it is supposed to be. Note that this is NOT a fix but only a workaround because it only suppresses the error/warning messages and does not fix the root cause. Using an older kernel would probably fix the issue but I never tested that.
End Edit

Edit: Removed the boot.log that was below my QSI since that is irrelevant to the issue and added the text between the "Edit" lines.

kmathern wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 2:18 pm I can figure out what some of the mirrors are, but can you actually choose a particular mirror (without resorting to a bunch of command line tricks)? It looked to me like it was randomly choosing a mirror for you, like it's trying to even out the load.
SourceForge download pages always give you an option to choose a different mirror if you prefer, but as I recall you go to the "Problems Downloading?" page to do this.
Yes, but there are two problems, both of which apply to me:
  • Their algorithm to choose a site assumes a faster link speed than I often have, and that impacts both the source it chooses as well as the 5-second time-out being reached before I have a chance to make use of the "Problems downloading?" button.
  • If you're easily distracted by pop-ups and flashing text/images and you don't know where to look, you might miss it in the 5-second window you have to click on the button. Here is where they put the button you must press:
    Image
There is another, more manual, way which bypasses all of that:
  1. Instead of clicking the link to the .iso file, right-click on it and copy the URL.
  2. Open a command line and paste the URL into the following, replacing "URL" with the URL you copied from the site:

    Code: Select all

    echo URL | awk -F/ '{print "https://sourceforge.net/settings/mirror_choices?projectname=" $5 "&filename=" $7 "/" $8 "/" $9}'

  3. Copy and paste the returned URL into your browser and you'll be given a choice of available download sites.
The above works with final and testing versions (until things change on the Sourceforge side).

I have found that choosing a site which is in the wee hours of the morning is usually fastest for me, even though it's half way across the world.

Desktop Xfce systemd
A minor bug happens, when the PC goes into "suspend" after some time.
My browser Brave-beta-stable freezes = I cannot click on tabs or on bookmarks, there is no reaction.
I have to close the browser and restart it, then everything works fine.

Another feature which doesn't work is the gui for packages in synaptic.
It doesn't show the active repos.
Maybe this is intended to avoid users to manually add repos ?
No big deal.
I tried to find the active repos and installed the gnome-software app with mx-package-installer.
That shows the active repos.
