How good is support for Radeon RX 9070 XT?

#1 Post by MaximB »

I bought a new Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT NITRO+ OC 16GB GDDR6 videocard,
How good is MX Linux support and features available for this card?
Should I go with MX-23.6_x64 “ahs” or a rolling arch based distro like CachyOS?

According to Phoronix, it should be supported in MX 23 AHS: https://www.phoronix.com/review/amd-radeon-rx9070-linux
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Install the 6.12 kernel and the Mesa 25+ package. Both available with the AHS repo.
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

Plus firmware-amd-graphics from AHS.

Isn't that already installed?
I know that I have firmware-intel-graphics and firmware-nvidia-graphics installed despite not having an Intel or Nvidia card in my machine.

Yes, but I thought you were advising the selective installation of the newer kernel and Mesa from AHS on stock Bookworm MX. The stock AMD firmware will not support the newer hardware.

Of course, if you meant use the full AHS ISO, all the goodies come preinstalled, or as standard updates.

Yes, I was assuming the OP was going to be running the AHS version.
KDE comes with the 6.1 kernel and I've forgotten which kernel the XFCE AHS version comes with.

OK, regardless of desktop, any version with the AHS repos will have our latest firmware and Mesa 25+

Speaking of kernels, I just found out our current AHS nvidia-driver will build on a 6.16 kernel, as will virtualbox 7.1.12 in the test repo. Probably our latest updated legacy drivers, too.
