No video with GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB Graphics Card

#1 Post by mgold1 »

Hi, I have an install of MX 23.6 that was running with the on-board video. I decided to install my GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB Graphics Card. When I booted up, it got to the OS selection screen, then the video went blank. I thought I needed to install the nVidia drivers, so I somehow managed to get a prompt, so I was able to login and ran:

Code: Select all

sudo ddm -mx -i nvidia
After it did its thing, I rebooted the system. Now, when I select the first option, I get a blinking cursor. If I go to the advanced login and choose the third option down (older kernel) I get the MX black and white logo, then the blinking cursor. There is no prompt or gui for me to log in, so I can't run any commands. What should I do? I'd prefer to get this running as is, as opposed to pulling out my video card.

We are going to need a QSI to really help here I think, but a few things:

First ,
Ctrl+Alt+F2 will put you to another terminal window
Ctrl+Alt+F7 will bring you have to the GUI window.

To restore open nvidia source drivers (Nouveau ) later use:

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

And have you turned off your internal graphics card ( or changed to the Nvidia card) in your BIOS? This might resolve the entire issue.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

What's a "QSI"?
First ,
Ctrl+Alt+F2 will put you to another terminal window
Ctrl+Alt+F7 will bring you have to the GUI window.
Ctrl+Alt+F2 worked, Ctrl+Alt+F7 did not. I was able to log in successfully.

To restore open nvidia source drivers (Nouveau ) later use:

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

"ddm-mx is not a known command"
And have you turned off your internal graphics card ( or changed to the Nvidia card) in your BIOS? This might resolve the entire issue.
Yes, I went into the BIOS and saw it was turned off.

What's a QSI? It's literally right there in Charles' signature, and mine, and in the forum rules you were supposed to agree to when joining the forum.

There is also apparently a bad package upgrade in some repos that ends up removing most of your system if you agree to let it do so, did you notice anything like that?
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Sorry about the QSI. Can I get that if I can only log in in text mode?
I just did:

"sudo apt-get update" and
"sudo apt-get upgrade"

I didn't notice anything amiss.
