Can't Install on Raspberry Pi 5

#1 Post by mx-individual-person »

Hello,

I had a working version of the Raspberry Pi spin working on my Raspberry Pi 5, but then it wouldn't boot, so I reinstalled MX Linux, and it won't boot.

I went back into the archive and tried to install an older version, but it has the same problem.

I used to Raspberry Pi Imager app from flathub, as well as just flashed the ISO directly to the SD drive, but both produced the same problem.

Is there something I'm missing with how to install MX Linux on my Raspberry Pi 5?

Not sure about your procedure. Standard method is to burn the ISO to a flash drive and boot into that, then install. Can you boot into such a Live session?

Please attach also your Quick System Info report, if possible

As you have been unable to boot three operating systems, is it possible either your Pi or the USB stick you are using is faulty?

Just to be clear you mean the pi img file correct? No ISO. We don’t have any ISO for pi. There is a piOS respin img.

Hi All,

Thanks for the fast replies.

I was able to easily install the Main Raspberry Pi Image (which is ok, but not as good as MX). As well as the yunohost OS ( which I don't really like.) So I don't think it's a hardware issue.

To be specific I tried these two images to install:

- https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... p/download

- https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... p/download

I tried burning the these files (after unzipping them) to the Micro SD card and booting into that.

Is it the case that I should burn the file to a usb drive, and have an empty SD card inside the pi, and write to the SD card that way?

I'm not sure that would explain why it broke in the first place, but if you think it will work, I will try it, and report back.

Burn the ISO onto a USB, then plug the USB into the computer boot it. Once up then run the Installer (icon on desktop). Lots of videos about this online.

sounds right. this one is the "official" one. https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... p/download

the other predates the pi5. the img is built on a pi400, so maybe there is something screwy. I think @Jerry3904 has a Pi5 though.

one thing to think about. on first startup, the file system expansion could take a truly long time, depending on how large your media is. there is no visual feedback while that is happening.

oops, blame it on the heat, holiday and family

I do have a Pi 5 on which I run the official MX-23.6. I have never had a problem with installation: I use MX Live USB Maker to burn it to a 64 GB microSD, insert that into the Pi 5, and turn everything on.

Why it failed in the first place: got too hot or SD out of room -- those are the first two I would think of. Did you try reformatting the SD before burning on the ISO with MX Format USB?
