Reaper package update ?

#1 Post by gmiga76 »

Hello there,

1st post here, sorry if I am breaking any rules.

Thank you for the wonderfull MX Linux . I am using what I believe to be a ReSpin with Enlightment.

I am currently running Reaper 7.07 , and I would like to know if there is a reason why there is no update coming for this package. Maybe the idea is that we update it manually ? .

Thank you for reading me , and sorry if this question is quite annoying to you . I have checked the forum quickly in a few sections and I have found nothing regarding this aspect .

Hi,

I assume you're using AV Linux then?

Reaper isn't packaged in the regular Repos becuase it is proprietary software, by arrangement with it's developer I include it on the AV Linux ISO when the ISO is released but the intention is that you try it out on a properly set up recording system and if you like it you can continue to use it and keep it current from the developer's website, this also applies to Ardour, Harrison Mixbus, Blender, and the commercial demo Plugins included in AV Linux. This is also the reason some applications are included in their AppImage versions to provide the latest versions where they are no longer current in Debian or maintained by MX. Occasionally there is some overlap (ie Audacity is also packaged by the MX Packagers) but I select the most recent releases when I build the AV Linux ISO.

If you grab an updated Reaper from the Reaper website and you no longer want the older version you can uninstall the 'reaper-linux' package using MXPI or Synaptic.

Hello,

Correct . Using AVL-MXe Enlightened.

Thank you for your answer .I ll then have to update manually .... which seems to be a common trend with Reaper : it would be so easy if there would be an official repo , but this is another topic .... . It s sad I really appreciated to have Reaper Linux there out of the box with some plugin, very nice idea .

No existing procedure to update without loosing those few plugins and distro integration ? ( shortcuts etc ... )

Thank you again .

Guillaume.

Hi again..

A little secret... As I'm working on new versions of AV Linux I sometimes place updated packages in my web archive to make them available on multiple testing machines, these are not always the very latest but often will be newer versions than the last released ISO:

https://bandshed.net/packages/AVL_MXe-23.X/

*NOTE this is not a Repository, it is simply an FTP folder to hold packages..

Is the free Debian version of Ardour more limited than the official version, then?

Steve, (having just done an Ardour 8.10 backport from Sid for the MX 23 test repo.)
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

My personal issue about Ardour and any Repo packaging is (a) Ardour is open source but not free, it is officially payware but they provide their source code for individual people and Distros to compile it which leads to (b)... The Ardour developers don't offer technical support for self-compiled or Distro packages, only for their own paid bundles. I have made arrangement with the Developer to supply their supported bundles on AV Linux ISO's and I financially am an Ardour supporter. I have to take their bundles (kind of their own AppImage sort of thing) and wrap them in a Deb so I can build them into the ISO but that way the User is supported for technical assistance. I have not used Debian or any other Repository Ardour packages in many years so I honestly don't know what limitations there may be lurking in the Debian sources. I do know that even if Ardour will build properly the developers often use modified and patched versions of the various support libraries in their own bundled builds which may differ in minor or major ways from the same support libs in Distros.

I should also make it clear that my linked archive above is basically for testing ISO builds and I grab what versions I can at the time, in general when it comes time to actual do a release build I try and prefer packages within the MX Repos (haha, you know when that is because I start bothering you...). Obviously there are things like Reaper, Cinelerra, Blender and proprietary stuff etc. that understandably aren't kept up in upstream Debian or available to be backported by you. The huge amount that you do cover is always VERY much appreciated!!

Hello there,

I would like to know if there is a new dev package version of a Recent version of Reaper packaged . That would be very useful , running Reaper 7.30 based on above provided package.

Thank you so much for all your efforts !

Edit: I am also keen of a step by step update guide of Reaper on this distro . I would like to preserve all plugins and link from dock.

Regards

Guillaume

Hi,

Reaper is not officially Packaged in MX, it's license would prohibit that. I personally obtained the developers permission to make Reaper Debian Packages to distribute in ISO's for AV Linux and very rarely I package in-between but I am not a Reaper package maintainer by any stretch. It is by far much easier to simply get the Linux Reaper binaries from the Reaper website like people do for Windows and MacOS.

Simply download, extract the Linux zip and either run from the extracted folder or optionally install it with the included script in the folder.

Thank you for your reply and for this amazing AVL

I have finally found a way to upgrade Reaper . I understand the constraints related to Reaper license and that it is not related to AVL choices. When passionate software dev will really start to think end user experience we might have one day the option to update this commercial software easily ... ;) .
