Laptop screen goes black during operation, just on kernel 6.1.0.37

#1 Post by PolkaDots »

I am relatively new to Linux, so forgive me.

I am running MX Linux KDE 23.6, KDE 5.27.5, kernel 6.1.0-37-amd64 on an HP Elitebook 820 G1, 16GB RAM, i5-4300.

I first tried Linux with Zorin 17. The laptop onboard screen kept going black periodically while the DP/HDMI outboard monitor continued fine. It could be restored just by changing the desktop settings from dual monitor to single, then back again. It was not related to screen blanking or power.

I couldn't resolve it so changed to MX. It has been rock solid for months. Not even a hint of the issue. Now suddenly it is doing it too. It occurs in the middle of any and every application. It disappears mid-word as you type. It disappears while editing audio. The back light is still on, there is no content. The computer is still fully working. The DP port still works. Changing sleep and power screen blanking settings has no effect. It doesn't have the same appearance as screen blanking. That is darker. This looks like the screen has full brightness but no content, so appears grey. Logging out and back in brings the screen back.

Significantly, if I boot into kernel 6.1.0.35 from the advanced boot menu, the problem is not present. I do not know if 6.1.0.37 was just applied in the last few days. The problem only happens while running it. There have been many updates over the last few days and weeks but I cannot find a way to see the history of updates via Discover to trace it it to something.

Since I spent days and days trying to resolve the MPEG codec issue recently that affected Audacity and VLC, (I see a solution is posted in the News. Whew!), I know when I'm over my head fixing Linux problems. I was wondering if someone could suggest ways I could get to root of this problem. Thanks! Running 6.1.0-35 is a workaround but I'd like to know what is up with this HP and certain versions of Linux.

Jo-Anne

The 6.1.xxx kernel has given a lot of users headaches over its lifespan. I suggest that you use MX Package Installer (MXPI) to install a Liquorix kernel. Be prepared to experiment a bit, but the 6.9.12-2 would be a good starting point. Reboot after the install is complete.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Welcome in!

I am going to suggest that you switch off to a linux kernel. (At least for a test) . That machine is new enough I would be running a liquorix 6.12.x. ( There are a few more things to try out, but moving to that liquorx will probably resolve this issue.)

You can load this kernel by starting MX Package Installer and then search for liquorix and choosing the 6.12 and then clicking on install.

Once the install is done, reboot and you should be in a 6.12. ( check your QSI to verify that.)

( Looks like j2mcgreg nija'd me :-) .. And yes, 6.9 or 6.12 are both excellent ! )

Ok. That's another new world for me to explore. Thanks for the pointer. Now I have to hit the books! I actually enjoy the problems in Linux because it is the best way to learn it.

It's pretty painless in MX:
1) launch MX Package Installer
2) click the "kernels" arrow to see a pull down menu
3) check to select the 6.12 liquorix kennel
4) click the"Install" button at the bottom of the page
5) reboot to automatically start using

Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

Wow, that is easy. I read up on it. I installed liquorix 6.12.17-1 and it is stable now. However, it created a new issue which I will have to research: "Virtual box cannot operate in VMX root mode." It suggests to disable the KVM kernel extension and recompile the kernel. Adventures in Linux! What is lovely in MX is the old 6.1.0.35 and 37 are still available in the advanced boot menu, so I can switch over to one of them to use Virtual box if needed while I research this issue.
Thanks for the insights.

This is a followup to my original post.
I have done many experiments to see what affects the screen blanking out on the built-in monitor.
I tried different kernels (6.1.0.35, 6.1.0.37, and the Liquorix that was suggested.). It ultimately affected all. I had upgraded the RAM around the same time. I experimented with that. Inconclusive. I ran Win 10 on the laptop. No problems. I ran other distros. It affected some, not others.
I believe I may have now found the source of it. In KDE the Display Configuration tool allows me to change the refresh rate of the built-in monitor of the laptop. The options are 60 and 40 Hz, with 60 as the default. When set to 40 Hz, the problem has disappeared. Some other distros and DE's don't offer a way to change the refresh rate of the built-in monitor in their display config tool, hence they are always 60 Hz I assume. I have this intermittent blanking out problem on them.

So I have a workaround for the issue. I posted it here in case anyone in future does a search for a problem like this. It may give them something to try.
