The reason I ask is that I do not recall Dolphin displaying the System SSD partitions in the left menu before, just external drives when mounted.

That's been the normal behavior for many years.
I typically have multiple installed versions of MX, sometimes another OS, along with a big data partition, a separate one for VMs.
I rely on that Devices section when I'm running my daily driver and need to find something on another partition.
