MX Freezes - Hard Reboot Required

#1 Post by deanr72 »

I'm running MX-23.6_x64 with i3-wm.

It's a new (for me) refurbished DELL 7070 SFF i7 9Gen i7-9700 8x 4.7GHZ 32GB. For the first couple of months I had no problem, but it's completely frozen 3 times in the last 2 weeks. It's happened each time while I was using my company's video conferencing system on Google Chrome (part of my everyday work duties).

I asked chatgpt, which suggested running journalctl -b -1 and journalctl -p err -b. Both of those commands in the terminal returned: No journal files were found.

I'm yet to try a different browser because the company say I must use Chrome for the system to operate correctly. And I'm yet to experience the problem while doing other work on my PC, although it could be a coincidence that it happened three times during a conference call.

I've attached my Quick System Info below. Does anything stand out as being a possible issue? Any next possible steps to locate the cause of the problem?

Thanks.

Try turning off hardware acceleration. I have had to do this on a few of the older intel's

You might also check in MX Tweak (Other tab) and try checking the "Use Intel..." driver. That has also helped resolve some issues like this.

*MXPI = MX Package Installer

Thanks @CharlesV . I'll try the 'Use Intel driver...' option first as I know how to do that via the tweak tool. :happy:

its pretty simple.
In Chrome, go to Settings | System, and then toggle off "Use hardware acceleration when available."
( restart chrome )

There are a some tests you can do too.. as well as different methods to turn it off. A good post on that is

Whilst forum signed in and see the odd freeze and this hard resets of topic! No mention as too where or was "Suspend or Hibernate" set for minutes of idle time say 24mins go into Suspend / Hibernate. I recently took a Latest Kern 10-2 snapshot of my all set image from my one box amd7950x3D and deployed overwriting the older kernel 8-1 on another amd 7800x3D system device. Whilst running my customizations on the 7800 the 7950 went into suspension and well what I've seen as the kernel jump in versions. Some the similar where by 1 or 2 times the system can be re-awakened the USB keyboard clock is there (ie caps lock key lites up )
yet 3rd time to wake up during the hours of the day . .a 3rd event my occur, return to my keys to get back at it. And nothing tapping control+alt+ T to open a Terminal by key seq. Tapping the Caps lock key shares nothing response. The RGB keyboard lites are changing yet no NumLock no caps lock nothing. The only method is kick it in the reset button to force a full return to zero reset reboot.

So 2 machines up on my private switch prior the reboot. I tried to ssh over - sure the Network stack was still up so I ran a quick " ps -ef " low and behold the Xorg and few other process all went to "Defunct state" meaning either reboot and or -HUP the process with many showing I could not remember the actual process. For Developers this might provide a Clue as to Stuff is happening under the suspend or hibernate. (Living in a high power cost region. I try keeping my use down to one machine until the rates change end of day to play or run up one of my pie's to also ssh around. ) There be an explanation to append another possible.
cause to such similar experience MX-Freezes. ?

@atomick
You need to start your own topic. Your situation is much different from what the OP has reported and please include your QSI when you do so.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
