live system freezes

#1 Post by cfli1688c1 »

I'm running the MX Live system from RAM. A couple of times now, when I tried to download a 2GB file, the system froze and became completely unresponsive. What could be causing this issue?

$ cat /etc/mx-version

Post your Quick System Info found in the MX Tools section.

You have to post your Quick System Info. Go to MX Tools --> Quick System Info --> run the utility --> click on Copy For Forum at the bottom and then just paste it into a new post here in your thread.

I've never run the live ISO from RAM before but this sticks out from your QSI.

Code: Select all

Memory: 15.37 GiB used: 10.77 GiB (70.1%)

I wouldn't be downloading things into RAM when running the live session, unless you have copious amounts of RAM. My big rig for example has 64GB and I've used the live session from RAM and it's pretty snappy.

You also need swap space. Being that deep in ram the system has no place to swap too when needed. On all of my live USB systems we have a dedicated swap space on the hard drive.

On my Tiger Lake systems, like you have, I have had to run on the Intel drivers to keep them from issues. ( MX Tweak | Other tab and then Use Intel driver in stead of default "modesetting") I have not had to do this on the Raptor Lake systems.

And depending upon which web browser your using, you may have to turn off Hardware acceleration too.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

Most of the 'generic' level USB drives have no buffer cache ahead of their main memory. SATA and NVMe drives do. Performance for large writes suffers accordingly.

I use a 256 GB NVMe drive in a USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure. Instead of persistence, I have installed MX on it and additionally have set up a user data partition. Yes, a little bigger than a USB thumb drive, but the performance is worlds better! One drive replaces a zipper pouch of USB 2/USB 3.x thumb drive in my service kit.

USB thumb drives do exist with buffer memory; this one has 24 Gb - "PNY 256GB PRO Elite V2 USB 3.2 Gen 2" In testing, it comes very close to 600 MB/s. Far better than my Sandisk USB 3.0 ones. This is now my pocket-sized USB drive, which is always with me. Xfce and KDE, dual boot. Grub set to better support MBR and UEFI booting.

Where I found mine - SSD-Tester 'Fastest USB flash drive benchmark test 2025'. There are SSDs ranked there too.
