Have you tried updating KDE using MX Package Installer? Open the program and go to the Enabled Repos tab and look for the update button at the bottom.
No I haven't. Would that be preferable to what CharlesV suggested above?

Thanks.
@LU344928 CharlesV is talking about upgrading the kernels. I wanted to know if we can get your system to upgrade.
I don't know what commands you ran in the terminal, so the next best thing was to use the package installer to upgrade the system.
I just used the standard apt update then apt upgrade. I always did it that way on my older laptap and there was never a problem.

Appreciate the advice, will get on to it as soon as I backup everything.

@siamhie I updated with MXPI but no change, still no HDMI.

So I took the next logical step which was to switch to the liquorix kernel. On @CharlesV 's advice I chose 6.12 and it installed successfully:

Code: Select all

inxi -S
System:
Host: mx Kernel: 6.12.17-1-liquorix-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64
    Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 5.27.5 Distro: MX-23.6_KDE_x64 Libretto September 15 2024
After a reboot I then checked the HDMI but it was the same as on Xfce, still picture only, and no sound.

Where to from here?

Take a look at which device is default under the PulseAudio Volume Control.
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

Good idea, now why didn't I think of that...guess it never occurred to me as there was never such a problem on my old laptop...

First screenshot shows the settings when the cable is unplugged. The second shows the state when it's plugged in, with the drop down menu on the right giving several HDMI options. I just chose the first one and when I checked it again I saw it was working, working as expected, with the laptop speakers cutting out and sound coming only from the TV.

Thanks for that, and thanks again @CharlesV

And it boots faster with this liquorix kernel. It was always fast anyway with this nvme, but it's noticeably faster now.

I'll try that on the live usb, if I can get it to boot again, that is. It's often problematic booting a live usb on this machine, but that's another topic...

Guess I should mark this solved.

Thanks again.

P.S. If anyone's wondering my old laptop was all AMD. CPU was AMD, with Radeon graphics.
