dancing mouse

#1 Post by rockyiii »

i bought a new mouse and it does not work very well with my my linux... the cursor moves and "dances" some times even so i do not touch the mouse.

i tried:

Code: Select all

In case you'd like to turn back to (the good old) Synaptics :

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-touchpad-libinput.conf{,.old} ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics -y

Reboot and try.
but this does not help this time.
What else could i try?
Thanks

Code: Select all

If this new mouse is a Logi M220 Silent Touch, you are not alone. Mine works perfectly when connected to my thirteen year old Acer Aspire V5 (Intel chipset), but its unusable on my much newer HP 15 and 17 (Ryzen based).
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

What's the brand and model of the mouse?
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

I would try to put it on another surface, and unplug other USB-devices and maybe try another USB-port.
All that is hopefully after I did try to give the mouse a new battery. ;-)

Also make sure it's not dancing because the touchpad is accidentally being brushed by a finger while you're typing--I would do that all the time.

Is it a hard wired mouse to a USB port?. I f not is it a wireless mouse and further is it a bluetooth mouse ?.. Do you have bluetooth on your Pc / dongle?..or is it a wireless 2.4
type again into USB dongle .. more common ?
Windows Pcs have sensitivty controls ..but this is linux and much can be found ..using + googling " mouse sensitivity linux " follow your nose and eyes there.
If a bluetooth mouse make sure that no active bluetooth gadgets/phones etc are disabled in the area/rooms where you are .give a try. good luck

I've seen that many times in the past and it was always the quality of the mouse, typically with a 400dpi resolution. I found it very prevalent with the Genuis brand and while Linux based systems were a little more sensitive to the phenomenon, all computer OS's available at the time would experience this dancing cursor, just less frequently and it often carried a cursor slowly walking across the screen when the mouse was stationary.

To my way of understanding, the fibres on the mousing surface caused the laser to refract, rather than reflect and the laser pickup was getting too much information causing it to think the mouse was always moving, hence, the appearance of the cursor dancing on the display. The manufacturers could have put in a better filter to detect scattered particles, but it's evident they did not or their pickup assy vs their sampling rate was a bad match.

I have much to say on this matter, but to cut a long story short, get another mouse, just not the same brand/model, and see if you can find a 600-1000dpi model, they typically have superior hardware and firmware to produce a much better service and tractability over the devices lifetime. Saving $10-20 on the cost of a cheap mouse only to get this type of hassle is not a saving at all.

I had this happen to me once. The mouse just rides up to the top and when I try to bring it down. I can move it half way down and then creeps back to the top. I had a joystick plug in, when I unplug the joystick. My mouse was operating just fine. Never found out what causes it. But I just make sure I have my joystick unplug when not in used.

I had the same thing happen with an off brand mouse that came with a keyboard for my Desktop computer and tried it on my Acer Laptop computer with the same results. I replaced the mouse with a different brand and model which corrected the issues. Currently I use a Logitech USB wired mouse which which works great on my Desktop and Laptop computers but since Logitech decided to make the model number of the mouse written with such a small font I am unable to tell you the model number of the mouse I use even with wearing glasses and using a magnifying glass. I might be able to read it if I had an electron microscope which I do not posses. To narrow down the issue you are having with your mouse you can try a different make or model mouse to see if that corrects it or disclose your make and model mouse if possible or try that mouse on a different computer to see if the problem still persists. Anything less it's just a guessing game in this thread on what is causing the issue. I find that the less buttons a mouse has, the less possibility of trouble it gives.
