Telemetry and MX

#1 Post by Pretty Vacant »

We came across https://privacy.sexy/ It has info and scripts for privacy protection for OS like (MX) linux in 3 sections. I have highlighted a few topics.
1-privacy cleanup
system and kernel usage data
Your system (operating system along with other software on it) and kernel store data that may reveal your behavior and can be considered sensitive.
Package managers
2- disable data collection.
It seems MX is doing some data collection. Next apps will be removed then:
Remove Popularity Contest (`popcon`) package
Remove `reportbug` package
Remove Python modules for `reportbug`
3- configure programms
- disable .NET telemetry

We are pretty much shocked. We always assumed linux is privacy friendly.
What is this about?

Yes, 'popcon' and 'reportbug' are available in our repos, but neither are installed by default. You really should have done your research before making these claims.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Are you guys accusing MX in particular or linux in general?

Best security is computer off, and use a notepad.

We don't collect any data.

This one:
It seems MX is doing some data collection.
If you had done a quick search using MXPI, you too would have seen that those packages were not installed and that the claims of that site were baseless.

I'd be pretty much shocked all the time, too, if I believed every website I read, didn't take time to understand or check the realities of the situation, and then ran around half-cocked and making accusations at developers.

We (the royal we) are shocked at the posting of whack information, sketchy weblinks, and quite frankly the boldness of such a blatantly false claim.

bot, hallucinating A.I., who can say. We (royal we) are shocked at the implications!
