[SOLVED] Brightness and gamma changes don't work in games (and outside of them as well)

#1 Post by popjah »

Hi all,

I'm playing UnrealGold in Wine and the in-game settings for brightness don't hold for more than a couple of seconds before they revert to what is a darker brightness, making the game quite unplayable. Whether I choose openGl or Direct3D9 in the game, it's the same thing. Other than that, the game plays perfectly well.

Normally using redshift but disabled it.

Also disabled display compositing from the xfce settings menu with no change.

I used the brightness app from mx-tweak and however high I put it it reverts back to 100, so even outside of the game I have a problem with general brightness.

From the nvidia-settings app, same thing: on the color correction tab, whatever I change it reverts back with a message saying: "warning: the color settings have been changed outside of nvidia-settings so the current slider values may be incorrect."

What is the program that is holding my brightness from "outside"?

I'm using xfce and my video card is nvidia GTX 1050 Ti (and it's a desktop, not a laptop).

Thanks!

We need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Do they work if you don't boot SystemD?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

Thanks, rebooted on non-systemd, but it didn't work (in-game and on desktop)

Ok, solved it: what was hijacking brightness/gamma was redshift. It was not enough to disable it, I had to quit the program in order for brightness to work (in the games and in nvidia settings).
