I'm not exactly sure, but I think the very "wise" advice of Charles V solved it. For some reason the speaker volume in ALSA was zero. I changed that and after a restart everything worked. Hopefully it keeps working. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.

Thanks to all for your help! Charles V "wise" advice seemed to solve it. For some mysterious reason speaker volume on ALSA was zero. I increased the volume setting there, restarted the computer and speakers work! If it ever happens again I'll know how to check ALSA settings.

@CharlesV
At the risk of sounding like I'm claiming prescience, I'll say I too had the same – or very similar – mindset when replying as I vacillated between posting and not.

Anyway, I thought that my original post was rather legible, granted, not as instructive as a college textbook or something similar where the prerequisite knowledge can be presumed, but still rather apparent, particularly given the context and order of the post and to whom I was replying. My first thought was to repeat what I said, tell them to reread it, or not reply, but then it seemed almost a slight affront that they didn't take a second to consider what I meant so I thought I give a rather unreservedly direct explanation. Defensively, the remarks were for an effect on the inquirer, not a negative remark towards other forum members – and I'm definitely no techie.

But,yes, you're correct, I shouldn't have posted that – my apologies.

I was going to respond within the next day or two, but then summer happened and my indestructible 4.0L inline 6 Jeep finally left me sitting in the parking lot without another vehicle. I think I blew a main bearing at over 400,000 miles – I don't how, I told people that I changed oil in it religiously, "every five years whether it needs it or not", but I think it was instead twice - and not just once - in fourteen years.

Again my apologies, and this was particularly relevant, "but lets please be considerate."

Cheers
